Beetles eating roots of potted plants
« on: May 08, 2022, 10:05:07 PM »
Hello. I have been moving my potted trees outside and have found a few beetles in two of my pots, and I suspect there are more in the rest eating the roots. Does anyone know a good way to get rid of them? I would repot and clean the roots of all of them, but I am nearing finals week here at my college, and so that isn't a feasible option.

I am sure there is something you can apply that will get rid of the pest.
Ranging from diatomaceous earth to some nasty stuff.
Google "treating pest in potted plant" or something like that and I am sure you will find all kinds of remedies.  Hydrogen peroxide, insecticidal soap and diatomaceous earth will come up in a number of the solutions.
There may be some other household items that can work as well.

Can you ID the species? Likely it's the grub larvae that are eating the roots, then emerging later as beetles. I've got that situation with leaf chafing beetles.

Those are very similar to what they look like. They are brown. I will probably try some hydrogen peroxide.

Here's what I use for Beetles and Grubs:

BTG Drench (Bacillus thuringiensis galleriae) - Soil Inoculation - Japanese Beetles/Grubs and General Beetles control

Milky Spore Drench (Bacillus popilliae) - Soil Inoculation - Japanese Beetles/Grubs and General Beetles control

I haven't had the good fortune of finding access to milky spore yet, but I use worm castings which contain chitinase. Results have been good, delayed emergence of beetles, and many fewer beetles than in previous years.
