Garcinia Macrophylla or Magnifolia?
« on: June 06, 2022, 12:43:09 PM »
Hola Amigos,
Recently purchased a couple of trees here in southern Ecuador, Vilcabamba area. The nurseryman called it a Mamey Zapote. It's clearly not Pouteria Sapota, the very tasty Central American Mamey.
Here it is known as Ecuadorian Mamey Zapote. Looks to me like Garcinia Macrophylla or Magnifolia? I'm told it likes full sun and little to moderate watering, probably due to its somewhat thick and waxy leaves.
Looking through various threads here on the Forum, the consensus seems to be that there are quite a few varieties of South American Garcinias, with no real clear classification. I haven't seen nor tasted any Ecuadorian Mamey fruit. From Mike's description here (https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=42574.msg418263#msg418263), I'm hoping it's the variety he finds very tasty!
Here are some photos of the trees.

Thanks! Had not seen this one. You may very well be correct.
cbss - Have you got any experience with this tree? Or maybe you've seen some good info online that you recommend?

Mamey Apple is a good fruit that is quite different from mamey sapote or any garcinia although it is a relative.
The person to ask in Ecuador is Jim West, truly a world class authority on rare fruits.

I have a fruiting tree. It is an air layer of a variety called Redlands but it still took around 8 years after planting to fruit. It has flowered for the last 4 years. This year was the first fruiting and I only got 3 small fruit. The tree flowers multiple times a year so I am hoping to get multiple crops. I have been told they are normally diocese but some trees fruit by themselves.
