Help ID Passion Fruit with red flesh
« on: July 05, 2022, 03:09:01 AM »
I found this passion fruit vine which has many small yellow fruits with red flesh. Can anyone help with the identification of this variety. Also, I'm not sure if it is safe to eat this fruit.

It appears from the photos that you supplied to be P. cærulea from the colors in the flower.  The seeds are edible but described as somewhat insipid tasting, though it is possible that there may be some individuals which may have better flavor.

Here's a link to the species with some photos:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passiflora_caerulea

It's a bit ironic to note that thiis species' name is 'cærulea', meaning blue, yet the seeds are red.  Ma Nature exercising her muse, I'm guessing!

Nice host to the Gulf Fritillary butterflies (Agraulis vanillae) which will appreciate the leaves.  Fruit, nothing special, but the butterflies are worth growing this plant.

thanks Paul, I guess it is safe to taste one. This vine is growing wild next to some wild figs.

Jack, I will need to look for that butterfly next time I check out the passion vine and fig trees, looks like a neat orange butterfly.

It is P. caerulea. Got it's name because flower has blue ring. Very common in Southern Europe. One of the most cold hardy Passifloras. Often used as a rootstock for P. edulis. Some don't taste that bad, having a bit of sweetness. Can easily be opened with fingers.
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

It was always my understanding that p. Caerulea (blue passionfruit) had a mild toxin not common to p. edulis. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for pointing this out about the cyanide. I did read further and it says the leaves have the cyanide in an inactive form – bound to sugars as chemicals known as cyanogenic glycosides. So until you chew the leaves the cyanide does not get released. Interesting info here.

Just don't eat the caterpillars or butterfly as those toxins in the leaves are repurposed for protection.

Deff P. Caerulea , the fruit is edible ,but as most have staited above, is not worth to eat since doesnt have a whole lot of taste. Ive also read about a slight toxicity in this particular fruit.
The plants makes a great rootstock for purple passion fruit, tested ! I guess it qould also work with the flavicarpa , but havent tried that .....

This is a weed in my yard. It grows everywhere and takes over the canopy of smaller trees. In the Summer I have a hard time keeping up with it.

Yup, I agree, it just grows everywhere like weed, hard to get rid of it. It is growing on the fig trees and everywhere else.

Yes it is a weed and i would suggest if someone uses it as a rootstock, or even grow it for the plant ,to use a big pot and not plant it straight into the ground !
