Is this different from a pepper plant? I kept a habanero plant for 4 years (my wife loves them) and it started to look like a tree. I also grew a ghost pepper plant to 7 feet until if finally fruited. I then threw it out immediately after taking a bite out of a pepper. I felt like someone what trying to exorcise a demon from my stomach.

Any more info on this, it is different to the other "tree capsicum" Rocoto or Manzano, Capsicum baccatum.

Rocoto and manzano are C. pubescens, which has a distinctly hairy/fuzzy leaf and purple flowers. This isn't it.

Yes you are right, it is C.pubescens not baccatum I was thinking of, thanks.

I'm surprised how little discussion there is for capsium pepper plants on this forum as they are surely tropical fruit, right?  I guess they may fit in the temperate-vegetable mindspace for some.

Habaneros make fun bonsai trees, thai chilis are pretty good also.  Jalapeno and bell peppers don't tolerate pruning as well it seems.

Mine are waking up now after being semi-dormant for winter.

I agree, although they could be well placed in the Tropical vegetable section. Also they do have many other homes on other forums.
The low heat / no heat types of C .chinense and C . baccatum are pretty interesting tropical alternatives to capsicum.

My understanding is marigolds become somewhat obnoxious if raised as a perennial, too.

I tend to think of them as temperate, because my tomatoes and potatoes are happily reseeding annuals.

Whoa! I have never seen a pepper "tree". I knew that the could be perennials but I have seen one live long enought o develop a woody "trunk".

I discovered after I started keeping habaneros over the winter that there's a bunch of people specifically making these bonsai chilis, there's even a Reddit topic about it with lots of great examples:  https://old.reddit.com/r/Bonchi/
