My Prainea Limpato tree . World's most exotic fruit.
« on: August 10, 2025, 05:58:46 AM »
Planted the tree 11 years ago. Has been producing for about 5 years. Bumper crop this year about 800 fruits. Very wide and low spreading tree. Gives great shade. Apparently tucans love the fruit as you see in photo :) Taste as exotic ad it looks. Seeds are available.

Definitely a Willy Wonka fruit and a collector's dream.  Do you prune your tree?  The ones we seen in Borneo were crazy tall.

Planted in wide open sunny space. Never pruned this tree.  It naturally grew low and wide. Few years later planted  two more trees. They were closer and in more shaded area. Those trees tend to grow more up, although still manages to spread wide, but just at higher level. Later seeds were from Maryoto and sounded like possible subspecies from description. Therefore I got them.  All three trees are now producing and all of them look and taste identical actually.

Very cool looking fruit.  The Toucan must have followed his nose to find the fruit.  I assume the kernel is the edible part?

The whole red part is edible and there is a seed inside. Red part has ultra thin edible skin. Green/yellow  nucleus discarded.

I'm trying to think if there any other fruits apart from the berries when you don't need to open anything or peel a skin. Can't think of any other.

I Went to Tenom agricultural park with high hopes during durian season that it might be ripe. There was only one green fruit on one of the trees. I know joe Hewitt fruited here on big island so hoping I will get to try it In the near future. The seeds must be pretty tiny. Can they really stay viable for longer than 5 days?

Ben...5 days should be fine.  Put them in a small ziplok with some damp coco coir or moss and they should be fine.

A lot of fruits in the pome and stone fruit family are like that? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your question.

You are right actually. Stone fruit family you don't peel the skin. Didn't think about that. But skin is still quite distinguishable on those fruits. . This fruit is more like a berry.. Just eat straight up.  Not really feeling difference between interior and exterior of the fruit.
