Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: starting coffee from washed green seeds
« on: November 06, 2024, 09:00:40 PM »
I found coffee arabica to be quite easy to grow and fruit, and I see the plants for sale everywhere for very little cost.  Unless you are planting a ton of them you are probably better off buying a few established plants, I often see them for $10 or so in 4in pots.

I had started one for fun, and to taste the cherry fruit.  I got rid of it after a couple years... saw they were selling for less than it would cost to ship so I just threw it in the woods.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Black necrosis on potted annonas leaves

I have never seen this on any of my annonas.  Mine get full direct sun when outdoors
do you use artificial light? mine are under almost 90% artificial light so maybe that could have been it? i notice the problem stopped once I lowered the light intensity.

No, I have never used artificial light

I have also had only bad results with lychees in containers.  They were steadily declining so I planter the still-alive ones directly into the ground iny my greenhouse.  Too early to tell if this will help

All of mine did that and never recovered.  I keep trying new ones, though.  This time I am also trying seedlings at the same time.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting cattley guavas
« on: October 30, 2024, 01:59:41 PM »
They are always grown from seed as far as I can tell, I have never seen cloned cultivars.  Both red and yellow are nice, I find the medium size fruits taste best while the overly large or small fruits on the same tree are inferior.  I much prefer my tropical pink guava, though, enough that I completely removed my cattleys to make room for it.

No guava fruit fly worms here in PA

My first guava airlayer took over 6 months to show root growth.  I still haven't cut it off yet.

It only makes sour things taste sweet, no other taste effects.  I doubt it would be of much help with what you are describing but the powder should be readily available if you want to try it.

The problem with extension cords is thin wires + long distance.  What you are describing sounds totally fine, because 10awg wire is huge and 10ft distance is very short.  According to the tables you can run a 15amp circuit on 14awg wire, and normal 20amp home circuits are 12awg which is thinner than 10awg.  https://www.cerrowire.com/products/resources/tables-calculators/ampacity-charts/

I have never personally seen a 10awg extension cord, but adding a 10ft extension when even using a cheapo 16+awg extension cord is common.  You'll notice that beefy electrical appliances may have flimsy power cords because it is only a short run.

You'll be fine.  Just don't let it fall over or set anything nearby on fire.

As far as cost, I used to run two of these 15amp space heaters in my old attic greenhouse.  It probably added $150 or more to my power bill but it wasn't a killer.  My power cost around 11cents/kwh.   I also had a propane space heater as a backup in case of power outage or really cold nights where the electric heaters couldn't keep it warm enough

And one last thing, get a wireless battery powered temperature alarm in case you lose power while you are sleeping.  They have saved me many times.

He had an earlier thread with details and photos.  It was pretty ridiculous looking but it really turned out well

Yikes, scary stuff! brian, what did they do to fix your eye up?

Just ice and rest, I am mostly back to normal by now

Marang looks great, nice work.  Nice view from your yard, too.

The pedalai leaves look like mine that was a seedling, not sure what mature vs juvenile leaves look like on these

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Looking for Curry Leaf tree seeds.
« on: October 23, 2024, 10:19:13 PM »
Curry leaf is probably one of the easiest plants to propagate by root sucker, they make a million of them.  If you know anybody with a plant you can almost be assured it has suckers you could divide if they'll let you.

I am not sure how easy they are to grow from seed, that might be easy too.  Mine has never matured fruits they always fall off, not even sure what the seeds look like

Turn the tables on them - eat the beetles  ;D

I expect fruit next year on my "regular" pyriformis and marcos "sweet uvaia" type, will report back

17
Good reminder, I either wear readers or safety glasses. The orange caps I use on rebar with PVC as stakes there my hoses turn corners.

Unfortunately every time I walk into my greenhouse with glasses on they fog up and stay that way, I have to wear contacts

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Protect your eyes from plant stake injury!
« on: October 21, 2024, 07:23:09 PM »
Maybe I am just clumsy, but for the second time in my 20yrs or so of container growing I nearly lost an eye.  Poked myself in the eyeball this weekend when bending down to pick up a plant.

I just ordered a pack of rebar safety caps  :)

19
I thought pyriformis *is* the sour uvaia?  And "sweet uvaia" are the lutescens crosses?

I think I have one of these seedlings that ultimately came from Marcos' seeds.  Flowered but no fruit set yet.  I thought it was supposed to be a hybrid of some kind as yes it was labelled "sweet uvaia"

After countless smothering sprays did not help, dinotefuran killed them, adults and all.  I still see a few eggs, if they hatch I am hoping the residual poison will get them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: armored scale infestation on mango
« on: October 19, 2024, 10:59:42 AM »
dinotefuran seems to have gotten the last of them, I still had a few remaining from the prior infestation and they had spread to some other plants.

22
Not a genetic way, but some varieties will be totally seedless if pollinating insects are blocked.

23
I am reading that dinotefuran is an effective systemtic pesticide against armored scale, may try this.

24
Despite a second application of hort oil the scales are very much alive!  I got an actual microscope out, and if I flip the scales over I can see the adults pulsating and babies crawling all around.

How can I kill these things?  I can't put these infested trees back in my greenhouse to spread.   The worst one, an abiu, has thousands of leaves covered with these so I cannot mechanically remove them all.  There must be some effective smothering agent or poison.  I am going to try a much higher concentration hort oil application for now.

Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: should I get a myrciaria vexator?
« on: October 10, 2024, 07:36:47 PM »
thanks, gotta tame the desire to PLANT EVERYTHING (chuckles evilly)

Tonight is first frost for me here so I had to bring everything in from outside.  When there is no more space in the greenhouse and you know some things must be sacrificed, it makes you look long and hard at a lot of trees to see if they are really worth their space.  I have so many container plants now I have almost grown to enjoy the cull.

Grow it if you're interested, just don't spend too much money on it if you might end up ditching it before first fruiting.
