Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Yuzu x Poncirus
« on: November 16, 2023, 11:47:23 AM »
Glad to hear you still have it and there is a copy out there with Florian. I tried this cross of poncirus+ pollen with my yuzu but didn't have any trifoliate seedlings. Maybe the pollen was too old. This spring I tried again with fast flowering trifoliate pollen and every single flower I pollinated fell off.

This cross would probably be good in zone 7a, flavor wise hope any of the yuzu properties carries over poncirus.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) Thread
« on: October 25, 2023, 06:26:40 PM »
I pulled out all of my maypop vines. Something happened with my tongue and I now taste all of the off flavors. I tried juicing some and cannot get rid of the scent, it's the same as the unpleasant flavor if that makes sense.

The vines were becoming very invasive, a vine somehow got under the concrete path and traveled through and under the stucco on the side of the house and was pulling it off of the brick 😂

On the other hand I have 2 edulis fruit on 2 different seed grown vines that I pollinated with maypop pollen after castrating the edulis flowers. I did this cross last year but was too busy to care for the seeds, I planted them outside and nothing seems to have come back.

Shame they were the biggest size this season, but the fruit just tastes bad to me now.

If my crosses pan out I will backcross to maypop that I am going to keep in a container.

This is fruit from the plant I used so hopefully the bigger sizes is something that can be passed on.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Pictures of flowering seedlings

There was an article floating around where someone in the Midwest had a potted grapefruit that was 50-60 years old and they mentioned it never flowered

5
They're all seedlings, nothing is fruiting yet

Rangpur lime x poncirus

I take a bunch of semi-hard wood cuttings, score the bottom 1/2 inch or so and put them in moist cococoir. I leave some leaves at the top. The container gets put under a glass fish tank or plastic dome (big water bottle or 2 liter cut in half) and everything is away from direct sunlight. I actually put everything on a tabletop under a grey polyglazed gazebo so they dont get cooked by the sun. When there are sufficient roots, it takes a month for the first roots to show up, I pot them into individual pots.

This could be scaled up. There are citrus cuttings in here now

Are you sure those aren't Meiwa? Meiwa can be mealy especially if the fruit is left on too long it will get moreso.

After trying the fruit

Soft seeded! Sweet-tart is accurate. Kind of a berry flavor. Probably not hardy as it's soft seeded.
Unless it's been treated with hormones (to make the seeds soft)

Found this at Walmart. $1.98 each
Any info on it? Hardiness? Only found that it's an early variety & "low acidity"

I probably can't ship USPS ground to CA or too far west. Not sure if the plants will make it. I sent one plant last Monday and it's supposed to arrive today Saturday. I'll keep you updated what the purchaser tells me. But if you buy more than 1 I'll split the shipping with you and send it priority.

Maybe someone can chime in, as this is the only cold hardy variety I've experimented with (along with Wonderful which is not a zone 7 pom). The Wonderful dies to the ground every winter.

If I find some room I want to try Belbek, which is early, hard seeded, and VERY cold hardy below 0f. Would increase fruit set through pollination of both. Seeds don't bother me, I chew them or swallow them whole, good fiber

Seeds are hard. I'm waiting for mine to ripen. I'd say these are medium sized, might not get bigger in my climate. Internet says they are sweet-tart, I will have to confirm that. The main appeal for me is that the plant is cold hardy in NJ

~half way sold out :)

I went to see the tree and bush again they are ripening

Doesn't look like it went all the way around the trunk. It will be OK, as long as it doesn't happen again. You can purchase trunk gaurds on amazon, or use chicken wire to build a small cage around the trunks to help minimize weed eater damage.

We've had a couple of 98 and 100 days during a heatwave this summer. Poms can take heat but this variety needs chill hours to bloom.

Hello, I have about 10 2 rooted cuttings of Afganski pom. Smallest size starts at 6" most are 8" or above

Hardy to at least zone 6b/7a, as seen in my NJ garden.

$10 each plus shipping ~$5 USPS ground shipping Note *I probably can't ship USPS ground to CA or too far west. Not sure if the plants will make it. Not open to trades at the moment as I have way too many plants

Thanks :)

I bought seeds. Didn't want to risk an expensive plant to the elements so risked multiple seedlings instead.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Can these be identified by pictures?

I've had this brand before. Sometimes the box will say "Product of California" or "Product of Chile" the kumquats are nagami. Sometimes on the smaller side. I suspect the imported ones are gassed because although they are orange and appear ripe, they are bitter and taste soapy. I have 3 seedlings from those fruit and they appear the same as my mature potted nagami.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Earliest ripening citrus

Look up early satsumas. Xie Shan is one, takes a few years to produce very good quality fruits. Not for zone 7 though. Prague is the best bet for non-hybrid cold hardy citrus (it's a chimera). Fruit ripens Nov-Dec. Mine have survived 1 winter unprotected with some damage, zone 7a.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Late grafts are pushing now
« on: September 22, 2023, 11:42:16 AM »
Good idea, cutting the top should divert energy. I have liquid kelp/sea weed trace minerals and nitrogen for spray. And 0 N-10 P-10 K fish fertilizer.

I was thinking if I should I make it a small greenhouse, like a big plastic bottle with the top cut open?

Here's some of the other grafts, they are either prague or morton. Tbuds that didn't push out. Pictures are from today. I forgot to label but easy to detect from leaves when they grow next season.

1 winter already survived:

Multi grafted taitri. Prague is the center trunk:

Prague trunk closeup

Prague on poncirus, 2 years old with 1 winter survived in ground. Grows very slowly. Rootstock is probably the culprit.

Prague on taitri, this was a small graft on a taitri branch inground I did last year that I thought died. The graft survived the winter and began to grow.
I clipped it off and rooted it with the branch. The left over branch on the tree I grafted with Bishop Citrandarin.

I will plant it out next spring, on taitri it will grow very fast compared to poncirus.
