It's like potato chips, if I can't have a bunch at a time I don't want emOddly enough the concern with eating large quantities of unripe lychee are related to the low sugar levels that result. It has only ever been reported among malnourished children (who probably already had low blood sugar levels to begin with) that ate large quantities of unripe lychee with almost no other food durring the day. The high sugar content of ripe lychee fruit probably counteract the hypoglycemic effect. Or if you want to look at it the other way around, there might be something in ripe lychees that naturally buffers the high sugar content. I have eaten several pounds a day at times during the season with no ill effects.
