Red Hawaiian Avocado?
« on: January 17, 2022, 03:09:55 PM »
Anyone heard of a Red Hawaiian Avocado? Seen one at my local nursery and can't seem to get any info on it. Taste? Cold tolerance, etc.? Could it be mis-labeled?

Maybe it was Hialeah Red?

I believe it’s grafted by Fruitscapes and is from budwood of a red avocado from Hawaii.

They also propagated other avocado varieties like Mavi Maki, Kool Bamboo, Victoria, and Schautter #2 recently from what I saw

Thanks for the replies. I will call Fruitscapes and ask them about it.

spencerw, since you live in Hawaii, maybe you can help me identify this avocado I purchased and ate when I was there many years ago. I show the 2 Gold skin avocados next to a yellow papaya and green skin avocado.

Do you recognize this Gold skin variety, it was sold at one of the fruit stands near the road. I grew the seed and my tree is doing well and it fruits but the skin doesn't get as yellow/gold as the ones in my photo.

Thanks Pine Islander. However, I did not see " Red Hawaiian," but, the varieties on this page are so many that I have not heard of, which is mind blowing. I may just buy it to see what it turns into. I picked up an expedition at Echo last year, just out of curiosity to see what it becomes. So far this year it has had great growth and just after the rains here it started to bud, but I may break them off to give the tree some more time to establish itself.

its pretty common for wild types to have that golden color. im not sure if its fertility, some deficiency, or genetics to make that happen. on our puna lot we had at least 5 that produced that color skin. we had reds and dark greens as well. there is a ton of variation since they like to cross breed
