Great summary Coconut Cream! Custard apple also didn't live up to the hype in my opinion, got to try some for free last year when staying at a fruit farm in S FL.

Yellow jabos can do well in shade (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_cWKEHRY5E) so that sounds like it could be a good spot Coconut Cream. Their flowers are also gorgeous, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1a07ggw6kk

Coronata restinga fruiting for first time here

Taiwan has zero fuzz on the underside of the leaf so it’s definitely Edulis.

Amazing offer, PM sent. Is Taiwan C. tetrameria?
[/quote]

Thank you for confirming, I'm hoping some of these later fruiting varieties in CA may behave similarly here in FL and fruit later.

One of my seedlings also has some weird yellowing, but the new growth looks fine so hopefully it's ok.

All the varieties listed as hasn’t fruited have now. Got to try fruits of Taiwan and Walton recently and Lemon Gold is holding now :)

What did you think of Taiwan?

Pozo Azul sounds interesting too, Lara Farms says it's compact/dwarf, precocious and fruits from Nov-Feb: https://www.facebook.com/larafarmsnursery/videos/pozo-azul/1566179990669377/

We need a flavor review though! :)

Great to hear about the excellent seedling fruit! I just planted out some 1 year old seedlings in part shade, sounds like there's a decent chance they'll produce good fruit. They have a beautiful magnolia type look.

My seeds took almost 2 months to germinate, it's fun to see the brown seed pods pop out and the new leaves emerge.

Nonetheless, I am going to try growing G-3 up here.
May be a good choice for northern growers as the fruit may only take 6-8 months on the tree before it ripens compared to 12 months with larger sized mameys.

Great info! Is that the shortest ripening mamey? It'd be helpful to know the ripening timeframe for each variety.

Some people in Central FL are growing Viejo because it's supposed to have a shorter ripening time of 11-12 months. Didn't know other mameys may have even shorter fruiting times.

Amazing selection! When do your different white sapote varieties fruit usually? Do they have different seasons? Thanks in advance!

Thai jujube. Lara Farms recently had the fruit for sale, very glad I didn't plant this one after trying it.

My thoughts exactly, RS! The Jujubes were stomach-turning. Bitter and nearly inedible at any stage of ripeness. When they got more brown they turned soft and putrid.

I would rather eat a June Plum and that's saying something!
I bought a Thai jujube from montura gardens a couple years ago and it took me a while to get the ripeness down. There’s a super small window between being bitter/ green and musty/overripe. If you catch them in that window just as they start to turn color to yellow they’re actually pretty nice. Very sweet and a nice applish kinda flavor. Great field snack. I’m guessing Lara probably sent underripe ones

Lara Farms sent a nice mix of fruit in various stages of ripeness from bright green to light yellow, which was mildly sweet like a bland apple...not my favorite.

But it's a fair point about keeping an open mind and trying new things. The first few times I had sabara jaboticaba, it was terrible. Super astringent, bright shiny black and not properly ripe. I prefer them at the dull slightly squishy stage.

Coconut Cream, thanks for recommending Hasya, it's delicious! Agree it has more complex flavor depth than just sweet like some other sapodillas, and only a few small seeds.

Highly recommend Erickson Farm. I ordered the small 7 lb box and received 10 lbs / 26 fruit, best $45 I've spent lately :)

Have you gotten to try Gigantia?

After reading this thread, I have to get a Wurtz! Someone mentioned an avocado calendar earlier, this is one for Central FL from a local nursery, we can't grow the cold sensitive varieties like you can in South FL

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pest Control
« on: February 22, 2025, 09:57:31 AM »
Our local animal shelter has a "working cats" adoption program for nurseries/groves pest control, that might be another option.

In my yard, I use gauze bags, netting, plastic clamshells and aluminum can "alarms" to try to keep the critters away. The sonic systems didn't work at all.

My Aqua Viva White Sapote just started flowering too, about a month ago. Haven't tried the fruit yet.

What is Aqua Viva variety? I can't find any info about it. Thank you!

Who knew, wasn't Denzler supposed to be fall fruiting?! Maybe it gets a second crop or something.

That was one reason why I got the Denzler from Catherine at Jack & The Beanstalk Nursery. She talks about the fall season fruiting in this video:

https://youtu.be/upFkbFA-7ls?si=ysNMt5te7_4WCMPA&t=1090

Thanks Coconut Cream. Also found this: 'Denzler' is a variety with a longer than average shelf life. It is considered an everbearing type with small-to medium-sized fruits that have smooth creamy flesh (https://www.plantithawaii.com/exotics).

Of course Hawaii is different than FL, but maybe it'll be semi-everbearing in FL if you already have fruitlets and it continues fruiting into the fall.

Dang, glad I don't have the white trunk! Thanks for the info. I bought a small seedling 2 yrs ago from Bellamy Trees that's just under 3' tall with a 1" diameter gray trunk. The new leaves are round but mature to elongated.

Wanted to see if anyone has any cambuca updates? Are they still taking about 8-12+ years to fruit?

About to put mine in the ground, can't wait to try the fruit.

Denzler isn't doing anything yet which makes sense since it's supposed to fruit later in the fall. Anyone else feel free to add your notes so we can all learn!

Interesting. My Denzler flowered a while back and has already set fruit here in the very southern tip of 10A.

Who knew, wasn't Denzler supposed to be fall fruiting?! Maybe it gets a second crop or something.

I should probably leave out Denzler this year since it hasn't yet been here a year to fully acclimate. The others have been here over a year.

22
Galatians, it's interesting that yours are blooming so much earlier. Hope you get a nice fruit set this year!

Hoping to learn more about when different white sapote varieties flower and fruit here in Central FL.

In general, I've heard we're about 1-2 months behind South FL. Growables (https://growables.org/information/TropicalFruit/SapoteWhite.htm) says the fruit ripens 6-9 months after flowering.

For me this year:
- Campbell just finished flowering (early Feb)

- Younghans is also flowering (early Feb)

Beautiful trees johnb51!

Nice to see you liked Hasya, Erickson Farms sells Hasya fruit very reasonably for shipping or pickup in case anyone else might be interested in trying it: https://ericksonfarm.3dcartstores.com/Sapodilla_c_6.html

Gah, there's a California ban on Florida sapodillas.  I'll get to try them some day.  Maybe when my Butterscotch bears fruit.  Though it sounds like I should pick up another variety as well.

Sorry about that! Yeah looks like they can't ship to CA, AZ or HI.

Coconut Cream, I contacted them last week to ask about the varieties too and finally heard back the other day confirming Hasya. They must be getting busy!

Ha! I'm with your girlfriend. Although the tropical fruit flavor was great, the black stuff near the core was really bitter and hard to avoid. It's an interesting novelty fruit.
