Hey all, Question on grafting.

I grafted 3 5* Citrumello on Volkamer lemon, as well as 3 Poncirus + (The goal of this was to create more budwood and practice my grafting of citrus, which I had limited experience with).

All 3 5* grafts are awake and have been growing for weeks. Some have 8 inches of new growth.


2 of the 3 Poncirus + grafts are green and appear to have healed, with some marginal bud swell but nothing further. The other one died and dessicated.

Is there any way (hormonally) to help wake a sleeping graft?

I've had some luck applying a BAP paste depending on the circumstance, but generally temperature/daylight seem to help the most. Sometimes rootstock begin to wake up sooner and at lower temperatures than scion varieties. Finding a way to to provide supplemental heat and light to the graft may work, i.e. a warm light bulb in close-ish proximity to the sleeping grafts.
Both my Poncirus+ and Finger Lime grafts seemed reluctant to grow unless temperature highs were 70-85F.

If it's citrus grafts, I had grafts that were green and no buds for over a year, then it finally started to bud out fine and growing still.
Be patient.

I've also had grafts (budding) that sat dormant, even a couple years.  I've 90% given up on some, and made a new graft onto a secondary leader of the rootstock, only to have the first (old) graft also start growing.

Same here, my record was about 2yrs before the green scion showed any new buds. Still growing well now.
