growing citrus in an apartment

(1/1)

eggeto:
What can be the best rootstock for someone living in an apartment, zone 8?

personally I don't have a good experience with swingel (top stem dies, rootstock stays alive)
I am currently testing FA5
and I'm thinking of trying poncirus trifoliata.

I hope someone can say "this is the best rootstock" before I waste money on it again.

i had 2 lemon trees (see photos below)
that were grown from seed in early 2018.
i think they are Verna lemons?
(standard lemon from a supermarket)

They had less problem being brought in during the winter and being outside during the summer.
for the last 3 winters they were kept  outside (not anymore with me)

i find it a bit strange,
because a lemon tree apparently experiences less stress than my grafted trees,

Americ:
I find FA5 interesting due to its salt tolerance. Poncirus is certainly resistant enough to root rot for me, but I find it to be far too sensitive to the salt accumulation that can occur when it is grown in a pot and watered with tap water. I find it necessary to occasionally over water it in order to flush out any excess salts that have accumulated. Furthermore, Poncirus suffers badly under drought and I have the problem that my growing medium drains too well and dries out too fast in the summertime, negatively affecting growth and nutrient uptake.
I have a Kishu on FA5 that seems to be doing well for me in a pot. My two trees on Carrizo are unfortunately suffering pretty badly from root rot right now. Yuzu has been a surprise for me as a rootstock. I find it to be quite suited for pot culture with good compatibility with yuzu and it's hybrids like sudachi.
I would be interested to try 5Star as a rootstock. I have a couple of seedlings that seem to be true to type and have the impression that they are pretty happy growing in pots
I am also interested to hear what kind of experience other people have made.

I think the possibilities in terms of variations are limited on Yuzu or verna as a rootstock.
I should try grafting on the Venrna plants to see what the result can be.
(In my opinion they do well outside all year round in zone 8)
it's a pitty there is little information known for both.

what kind of potting mix do you use?

Can confirm that 5star roots way more easily and aggressively than trifoliate.

poncirsguy:
Pure trifoliata is very difficult to root
