Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus pruning and soil mix options
« on: May 21, 2021, 04:09:19 PM »
I use 5-1-1 and or 5-2-1 (Bark, peat, perlite)  Plants grow fine, but does require little more frequent watering.  I am also doing an experiment with a new citrus tree.  I am growing the tree in 100 percent pumice. Pumice holds more water and more air then does other lava rocks such as scoria.  Further differences, lava is a rock, pumice is a volcanic glass. Both contain a multitude of open crevasses/tunnels that holds extra air/water throughout the particles.  I just started with this new medium, so it will be a while to determine it value to growth and health of a citrus tree.

What kind of bark?  Would pine bark nuggets work?  This mix has pretty large pieces so not sure if they should be smaller.

Thanks! I don't see any activity any more.

Should I use neem oil occasionally to keep them away?

Thanks for the reply! I have treated I believe 4 times over the last 4 weeks.  How many applications does it typically take to get rid of them?  Should I continue spraying?  What are your thoughts on neem oil to keep them away? I don't see them anymore like I used to.

For reference, this was my tree 4 weeks ago.

Citrus General Discussion / Satsuma tree help, leaf drop
« on: May 11, 2021, 09:03:20 AM »
My satsuma tree is dropping leaves and the majority of the leaves are turning pale and hard.  There is fruit on the tree that is growing, however there is no new leaf growth.  My lime tree has tons of new leaf growth right now.  I sent pictures to my grower about 5 weeks back and he said he thought I had spider mites.  I have been treating every 7 days with a miticide and I washed the leaves with soap and water.  Can any identify if I am still dealing with spider mites and what the best treatment should be? Thanks!

From my research I believe it is a brogden avocado tree.  I bought it from here:

Looks like your tree is wilting. I would cut down 1 inch below the black wilted trunk and then:  1 Pay a lot.  2 Give the tree some shade. 3 do not over water 4 give the tree a drench of Agriphos or similar product.  5 Pray a bit more.

Some times there is decease that comes from the nursery it manifest once the tree is put in the ground in full sun and there are not enough root mass  to keep the tree hydrated

If it eventually dies, I hope not, don't worry most of the so called cold hardy avocados are not really that good.

Should I transplant it to a pot, that way I can control how much sun it gets? Where it is now, I have no way to limit the sun exposure.

The tree looks toast from the sun.  Were you watering it enough?   Whats the soil like, how hot was it?

You may need to use a shade next time.  If it went straight from a shipping box into the ground it likely shocked it.  Also maybe plant when its not so hot.
I would say early on it didn't have the best drainage and we were getting a ton of rain, it probably didn't dry out for a 2 week period.  Since then I have tried to monitor the dampness of the soil and only water when needed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with avocado tree trunk turning black
« on: October 16, 2020, 02:30:23 PM »
Hello, I am fairly new to the fruit world.  I bought a cold hardy avocado tree and planted it in the ground about 1 month ago.  It dropped a lot of leaves at first and some branches started to turn black and die off.  At that point, I tried to replant it in the ground slightly proud to give it better drainage.  It's been a little over 2 weeks since I did that and now the trunk is turning black and the top is dying.  I scratched a little bark off the trunk and it was still green underneath.  Here are pictures of the tree as it stands now.  Any help in keeping the tree alive would be greatly appreciated!
