Best Self Fertile Sapodilla
« on: March 09, 2024, 07:24:45 PM »
I am thinking about getting a sapodilla. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good one that is self fertile? The one my dad had years ago was not. I hear a lot about Butterscotch. Does anyone know if it is self fertile?

I have heard butterscotch and Silas woods are both self fertile. Don’t have much experience but my Silas woods flowers and sets fruit often, but I thin them because my tree is super small.

Can confirm that both butterscotch and Silas woods sapodillas are self fertile. Have both at my home with fruit set.

Are sapodillas typically self-incompatible?  I have a Tikal only and I am wondering if I should order another one for pollination.  I can't find any list.

SW flowers and sets fruit well, seemingly on its own; but I don't know where these bees and other pollinators have been or what they have gotten into. SW is a nice sap, smaller size fruit.

Alano could be a variety that is no longer in favor but it is definitely a self fertile tree with consistent, heavy production for me.

Why is Alano falling out of favor, if you don't mind me asking?  I was eyeing it as a compliment for my Tikal.  Is Butterscotch just replacing everything else?

If you have two trees, how do you know they didn't cross pollinate? Did they bloom at different times? Thanks for the response.

If my memory is correct, Wayne Cliffon had two huge saps at his place. I want to say that one was a Tikal. He lived on a residential lot, and space was at a premium. So, I can't imagine that he would have had two monsters taking up that much space if it set well on its own. Hopefully I'm wrong and he just really loved sapodillas.  :-\

Yes, the Silas woods was not flowering when the butterscotch was. The butterscotch currently has about 12-15 fruits set on it.

How big is your butterscotch? I heard it was a Shy bearer.

Alano is a perfectly fine sapodilla.  This is also the first time that I've heard it's falling out of favor.

I believe they are all self fertile.
Just like some trees they may need a little push in the beginning.
My alano sets just fine by itself.
Butterscotch is a good one I hear, but I think a lot of people like makok too.

I'm pretty sure the older types were not self fertile. We had one for 15 + years that flowered but never really set fruit until we bought a Molix. When it finally set a few fruits, they were round and grainy (Brown Sugar?). My dad cut it down.

Alano and SW seems to set tons of fruit no problem where ever they are.

My butterscotch seems shy but its still quite young.

I'm Growing a Makok in a pot it has been consistently flowering and has a bout 8 fruit on it now.  The tree is is about 4 feet.  What has worked for me is pinching the flowers after they open.  That has worked well for pollination.  Since it's potted that's not a problem.  I am growing out some seedlings that I will graft this spring/ summer.  I want to add Silas woods to the potted collection since it too is a dwarf.  But will also graft some other varieties to see how small I can get keep in a pot and fruit.  ere are some pics of the Makok and seedlings.

Pretty new to fruit growing but I am full steam ahead and getting much better.

This was just wild speculation on my part, based on the fact it's an older variety and I'm in Hawaii, away from developments in fruit culture found in Florida.

I’d recommend the Excalibur sapodilla variety. My mom has one and it produces tons of good quality fruit every year without another sapodilla nearby.

Some things I've noticed about SW: it always has fruit, the fruit are quite good (if you can beat the squirrels), it fruits in shaded areas, it requires nothing extra from me/easy to care for, its a beautiful tree, and the tree is easy to control. I've topped and trimmed this tree once in about 8 years.

I know much less about BS, but am hopeful it will kick all other's asses when it comes to fruit quality. Ours has flowered and held fruit, but not all the way to ripening yet. It's still a baby.

I have grown quite a few varieties and sampled over 20 additional types. Grit free, low latex, precocious and heavy bearing are qualities to go for. The varietal trials at the kamerunga Research Station ranked many types quite poorly and I recall ponderosa and brown sugar were examples of this. Sawo Manila was one of the higher ranked types. On the basis of the glowing performance of Krasuey I planted 2 along with tropical, C 56, sawo manila and 2 others about 20 years ago. I chopped all out and kept the sawo manila and 2 krasueys. In time I also removed the sawo manila. The krasueys being heaving bearing and ever bearing with high quality fruit were so far ahead it was surprising. I get massive crops and year round fruit that is of high quality. If you can get a true krasuey you won't be disappointed.

Is this a variety one that has a long fruiting season? I planted a small one last year and know nothing about it except the ones I ate from excalibur were excellent.

I noticed Lara Farms has Butterscotch sapodilla in stock now so I just ordered one.  Maybe I will graft some scion onto my Tikal and sell off the Butterscotch once I know the graft takes.
