Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold (actually cool) Air heading Our Way
« on: November 06, 2025, 02:03:52 PM »
Can't lie, I'm excited. Temperatures forecasted in high 50's after a warm weekend.
Will it be enough to spur Rosa, Dwarf Hawaiian and Rosigold to bud out some panicles?
What do you think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The much maligned mango
« on: May 17, 2025, 07:12:14 PM »
Saw this fruit 11 foot up nestled in the canopy. Got my picker, fell into the basket with the lightest touch.
We've sampled Rosigold, Pickering and Carrie from our garden this season. This fruit had my far the richest flavor and sugar content. Wish I had a brix meter, I'm certain is would have read above 20. From hanging on the tree to my belly in 5 minutes.

The unfairly much maligned Haden

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jean Ellen
« on: May 13, 2025, 12:21:26 PM »
I see Tropical Acres Farm has Jean Ellen available for sale. It's my understanding this was a Frank Smathers cultivar developed at Four Fillies Farm. Has anyone here tasted the fruit? Is it top tier variety?
I acquired a tree based on growth habit and it being an early season Indian flavored fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Holy Grail Varieties
« on: May 01, 2025, 12:46:45 PM »
In your opinion, which varieties are the holy grail selections for the Florida Mango collector?

I think Zill 40-26 (Creamsicle) deserves consideration.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's being grafted?
« on: April 14, 2025, 01:40:17 PM »
We just grafted Créme Brûlée onto Kathy yesterday. Also Jaya onto an underperforming Juliette.
Anyone on the forum tried Jaya? We are trying it with it's potential to giving off season fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Micronized Azomite
« on: March 26, 2025, 08:39:53 AM »
Waiting for Amazon to deliver a 44 lb bag of micronized Azomite. I'm going to put it through our My4Sons sprayer with tank agitator as a foliar feed.
Anyone else tried this? Will the fruit trees absorb the minerals through the leaf membrane? Did I jump the gun? Am I on the wrong track, is my thinking wrong? Did I waste my money? $

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Only 2 inches of rain
« on: March 24, 2025, 11:17:30 AM »
We've have had only 2 inches of rain in 2025. My old established mangoes don't care. Trees under 3 years don't have enough root establishment on my limestone bedrock we call soil here. Been dragging the hose giving  deep watering the last couple of weeks. Avocados look much better with the water supplements.
Are you as bone dry as we are?

« on: March 20, 2025, 11:13:24 AM »
Is it too early to start tipping mango trees in South Florida? All opinions are sought.

Mod edit: Edited subject to be less vague.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garden Friendly Fungicide by Southern Ag
« on: February 20, 2025, 01:00:09 PM »
Southern Ag®️ sells an OMRI listed product named Garden Friendly Fungicide.  Interesting it's active ingredient is Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain D747.  That's the same active ingredient found in Double Nickel 55 Fungicide. They are available online in in pint containers that won't break your budget. 1 teaspoon per gallon. Can't spray copper all the time. Alex (Squam256) says you gotta rotate products.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Azomite Users
« on: January 03, 2025, 09:37:35 AM »
To those who use Azomite:
How often do you apply?
What quantity do you use?
Do you apply granular or micro fine dust?
Is there any benefit to mixing Azomite micro fine dust with water and using as a foliar spray?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Powdery. Mildew 2024 Paranoia
« on: January 02, 2025, 09:18:37 AM »
Just finished walking the garden this morning. Can see the sulfur residue from yesterday morning spraying. Mango trees are looking good,
So are all the neighborhood mango trees. Many with spectacular heavy blooms that have not been treated with sulfur. Am I being paranoid over my 2024 experience? It would be a kick in the ass if powdery mildew didn't show up in 2025.

Little Gem  - easy to keep pruned small, Indian/Alfonso flavor
Honey Kiss - easy to control to small size with pruning, precious, classic flavored
Neelam - precious, needs pruning to keep small,  Indian flavor
Myatrynat - often overlooked late season variety, Burmese variety with soft indochinese flavor similar to Florigon, slow grower

Can't think of any additional varieties

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this tree ready?
« on: November 20, 2024, 11:14:23 AM »
Dwarf Hawaiian data
1½" stem measured 12" soil level
Increased diameter +⅜" in 104 days
4'5" (53") tall +10 inches in 104 days
Canopy 4'5" (53") widest width
Canopy 4'2" (50") narrowest width
Flowered profusely 2024, picked immature fruit
Planted Dec. 2023 as 15 gallon tree

Is it ready to produce fruit? I bought a 15 gallon because I killed a 3 gallon. I didn't want to wait.

Please chime in with your thoughts.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / La Niña hurting Mango bloom ?
« on: November 08, 2024, 07:13:12 PM »
We may be jumping from a El Niño affected weather pattern to La Niña. This could cause a dryer and warmer late Fall / Winter. Potentially this could change blooming triggers. Could this be bad for Florida Mango 🥭 lovers?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold Front Wishes
« on: November 05, 2024, 11:33:16 AM »
Sure would be nice to get a cold front with overnight temperatures in the 60's for 10 days this month. We are getting showers before sunrise every day. Our mango trees aren't being stressed to produce flower buds. I am grateful that all the trees are resting and no longer flushing new leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When does it need to Flower? MANGO
« on: October 21, 2024, 11:35:47 AM »
Planted Dwarf Hawaiian,  Rosigold and Rosa for early season fruit. When should these trees begin to bloom if I'm to get any March fruit?
