Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mysterious Mulchi - Do you grow it?

This week, I have 2 shipments of seeds coming in (Lucky me! I haven't had one for more than half a year!), including about ~2 dozen kinds of seeds, including the Mysterious Mulchi.

There isn't much information out there on the Mulchi, and very few have fruited it.
Plinia Inflata is a very intriguing specie, and because of this seeds out very fast. When Bellamytrees of Anderson Tropicals get them in, they sellout sometimes within days. Anderson Tropicals has 4 left in stock, and after checking my emails they got them in a few days short a month ago. This might be the first time ever Mulchi have stayed in stock for over a month.

Do you grow Mulchi?
If you do, then I'd like to make this thread about your growing experiences. I doesn't matter if your seedling is half a decade old or half a month old, you've still learnt something, and it is worth sharing.
Here are some questions going through my mind that would be nice to answer:
How fast do they grow?
What is the best way to germinate them?
What do and don't they like? Direct sun? Humidity when young etc..?
Are they hardy or sensitive?
Are they attacked by pests and/or diseases?
Are they moisture loving?
Do they love fertiliser?
Do they like to flower before holding fruit?
Do they grow bushy or upright?
And lastly... Can they tolerate the cold???

Any experiences would be helpful, so please share them!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Mangoes Should I Grow?

In a few months I will be planting a food forest, after I finish my apple/pear/stonefruit orchard (5/28 trees planted).
For the time being, I'm in the planning stage. I've given lots of thought to tree spacing and paths, and now I'd like to think about cultivars/varieties of fruit.
I know I want Longans, Lychees, Black Sapote, Avocado, Annonas, Eugenias, Tamarillo, Passionfruit, Jaboticaba, Jackfruit, Garcinias, Ice cream beans, payayas, bananas, eugenias, carambolas, star apples, and many others, including everyone's favourite: The Mango!

These are the my favourites:
Kensington Pride. My favourite and the favourite of almost every Australian.
Maha Chanok. A very good asian variety with a different flavour and beautiful orange flesh.
Keitt. A very good late variety. Although it's really good, it's inferior to KP.

I'm in the process of deciding what other cultivars to grow, and I'd love some help. And here are some ones that I've been thinking about:
Lemon Meringue/Orange Sherbert/Lemon Zest
Mangifera Kasturi - Supposed to have a good spicy flavour
Choc Annon/Carabao
Asian Type e.g Nam Doc Mai
Brooks Late
Coconut Cream
Haden
Irwin (aka Mizayaki?)
Sweet Tart
Senstation
Zill

I'd love some information on what everyone grows, and loves, and what you think of the above varieties.
Information of Flavour, Texture, Growing habit, Fruit size, Fruit quality, etc would be really nice.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Is anybody else still waiting for Bellamytrees to send seeds?

Hello all,
Am I the only person who is waiting for Bellamytrees to send me seeds?

I remember that there was a thread a few months ago called "Bellamytrees scam", and a bunch of people said that their seeds had not been sent back then (~2 months ago).
I placed my order on NOVEMBER 26 last year, and on Wednesday I will have been waiting for 3 months for my seeds to have been sent. Am I alone, or are there others still waiting too?

I've been in contact for the last 2.5 months, starting (I checked) on December 6, and it has been delay after delay...
I'm wondering if I should just get a refund. I payed with paypal so I can get my money back no matter what.

Thanks for any responses.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Is Radiance Seeds Good?

I've seen the Radiance Seeds website a few times, and I was wondering if it was any good, and if they sell good, fresh seeds.
Has anyone bought from the in the past? And if so, have you been satisfied with your order?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does anybody else share my opinon?

I recently got to go to a great place called Tropical Fruit world. It's the biggest and best (in my opinion) tropical fruit farm in Australia. They grow >600 different fruits.
Last time I went I bought my first ever Mamey Sapotes - a Pontin and a Maganta.
The Pontin ripened first, and I quite liked it rich, wierd taste of syrup-y pumpkin pie, but I could only eat so much.
By the time I had finished my 1kg Pontin (3 or 4 days), my Maganta had ripened and was about going bad. I ended up procrastinating and never ate the giant fruit on my kitchen bench - I just went off.

Here is my point: I just reckon Mamey Sapotes would be better at a modest size, like the size of a large mango ~ 450g.
My reasons for my opinion are:
1: Smaller fruits are easier to eat in a single helping, making for a filling snack.
2: If you have to get through an entire giant Mamey Sapote without it going off, especially for a first-timer, it's not a great experience. Too much Mamey Sapote! Mamey overload!
3: Australian Mamey Sapotes are on the verge of going commercial, and I think that for the everday shopper there would be greater uptake of a smaller, mango sized fruit, than of a Giant that costs a fair bit, that you might not even like.

Anyway, that's just my opinon, what do you think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Food Forest Help Needed

In a few months, after I plant my stonefruit/pomefruit orchard, I'll be planting a food forest, and I would love some help regarding a couple of things.

1: How should I space trees?
Mainly a curiosity with the overstory trees. I want enough space between tall trees so that they let some light in between them, but not too much space.

2: Which trees belong in the overstory and which ones belong in the understory?
I've worked out that Mangoes, Ingas, Pouterias, Avocadoes, Loquats, Casimiroas, Black Sapotes and Artocarpus are overstory trees, and that Acerolas, Eugenias, Plinias and Psidiums are understory trees.
I can't figure out what to do with Annonas, Longan/Lychee and Garcinias, how to arrange the shorter lived trees like Bananas, Papayas, and Tamarillos. Especially bananas - I just can't get my head around how to get them in.

To anyone who helps me, thank you. I'm just getting started with food forestry and would love your knowledge.

At the moment, I've been growing a bunch of Grimal and Cauliflora Jabos from seed, and they've all germinated very fast, within about a couple of weeks. I was wondering if there was a way to dry or keep seeds from germinating so that they could be sold and shipped before they sprout. Just a thought, I was wondering if it was possible. Thanks!

I love star apples. They're an overall incredible fruit. There's a massive tree in my city's botanic gardens (Sydney Botanic Gardens, the one with the giant Emperor's Fruit trees), but I am unsure if it fruits. I would love to hear if anyone has fruited a Starapple or has heard of someone who has fruited a Starapple in zone 10a. Mind you, I'm at the very bottom of the zone  ::) (Local record is -1C/30F). Anyway, I would love some info. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling ID - Rollinia?

Hello,
I brought some seeds home about 15 or so months ago from a fruit tasting at a place called tropical fruit world. I thought they were rollinia seeds, but no I am not so sure. I would love some help with identification. They seedlings have grown well, however in the photos the leaves are a bit droopy as we had a thirty or something celcius (80-90F, roughly) day, and the seedling had gone a little while without a water.
Again, I would love some help with ID. Thanks!

I love Pouterias, and am trying to build a collection. I was looking at Anderson Tropicals, and they seem to have a couple 'giant pouterias': Pouteria sp. "Gigante de Colombia' and Pouteria sp. "Vereda Loma Linda". If anyone has information of these species, I would love to find out more. Cheers!

I recently visited a place called Tropical Fruit World. It's a place full of rare fruits - they grow over 500 of them. When I was there I got to eat a whole bunch of Jaboticaba. I loved the typical thin skinned cauliflora, but I came upon another type, and I would love some help with identification. It was bigger and had a thicker skin than a normal caulifora, and ripened later. I collect about a dozen seed and they are germinating, and seem to be polyembroyotic.
I would love some help with ID. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cross Pollination

I've started thinking about where in my property I would like to plant my seedlings (when they are big enough to go in the ground).
When they start to fruit, I would like to sell the seeds, but there is one problem: Hybridisation.
Lets say that I plant ten different species of Jaboticaba together - will they all cross-pollinate and produce seeds that will produce hybrids?
Is this the case?
And if it is, are there any tips/solutions?

Any help would be appreciated.

I was going through the Bellamy Trees website, preparing to make an order, when I came across two rare Pouterias; Pouteria Arguacoensium and Pouteria Salicifolia.

Both look interesting, and enticing to buy.

I have just bought a bunch of seeds from Anderson Tropicals, including a seed of Soncoya (annona purplea).
I live in a cooler climate, and my property gets down to -1.1C (30F)
I was wondering if anyone has had any success growing them in a cooler area, or if anyone has any tips.
Any help would be appreciated.
