Ethan - I am sure someone here can help both of us... I have yet to have this permit approved (I have applied a few times and had it rejected for various reasons).

Small lot seeds is simple.

The permit for live plant parts is still done through the APHIS e-permits system.

PPQ 587 Application for Permit to Import Plants and Plant Products

Most live plant material also requires:
PPQ 546 Agreement for Postentry Quarantine State Screening Notice

It is my understanding that the process is then determined by the source/origin country and the species being acquired.

(if you plan to import from different countries, I would recommend submitting separate applications for each, since the requirements will likely be different for each)

I wish I could share a success story, but I have 3 permits pending and have been rejected several more times.

Thanks for sharing the video... looks like I have a project for the weekend.

Rodney, that's a good looking pineapple!

Zip 3/4 of the bag closed - pinch the end open - hold your breath as long as you can and then blow into the bag (increase CO2) - and zip sealed.

I like to think that adding some CO2 to the bag helps the seed once it sprouts.

I don't know if it helps, but it makes me feel good that I have created my own little greenhouse for each set of seeds  :P

That sounds like the frankenstein tree I'm turning my cherimoya into... it's got tape everywhere.

My Manila got hit hard this winter (I left a bowl of water out one night and woke up to a 1/4" slab of ice).  It did get frost burn on a large portion of the leaves, but has surprisingly recovered nicely.

Does anyone have records of the biggest (tallest) recorded mango tree in Southern California?

While my in-laws in Brazil can eat a fruit, drop the seed into some sandy soil and watch it sprout the next day (*okay, maybe a slight exaggeration), I like using the ziplock baggy method.  I have had better success with this method than by planting directly - whether indoors or outdoors and regardless of medium (vermiculite, perlite/vermiculite, potting mix, mulch, etc).

It's more work than just planting the seeds outright, but it gives me a good idea of germination rate and speed.

SOLD!

I only have two growing now... both in the ground and I wouldn't describe either as vigorous.  My Haden is the better tasting of the two, but what started as a 5' tall tree 6 years ago has shrunk to about 2' - I knocked all of the flowers off this year in the hopes that it will make some sort of miraculous comeback, but it looks like an out of place shrub at this point.  The "Manila" seedling (LaVerne Nursery by way of Home Depot) has grown steadily from a 3/8" diameter stick to a 6' tall x 36" wide tree and sets a fair amount of fruit (collected a half dozen last year) and continues to grow almost a foot a year.

Ethan - how big is the VP that you have?  Curious how big they get in California.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help with Mango Tree Leaves
« on: April 28, 2013, 11:38:46 PM »
I am in San Diego also and it looks like the Peach Leaf Curl that affected 3 of my peach trees... not an expert by any means on Mangoes and not even sure if Peach Leaf Curl could affect Mangoes, but here is info from CRFG just in case...

• The fungus survives the hot, dry summer on the tree’s surfaces.. In spring, the
fungus is moved by splashing water and can infect newly developed leaves.

• To prevent peach leaf curl, treat peach and nectarine trees every year after leaves
have fallen. Copper-based fungicides, calcium polysulfides, or synthetic fungicides
can be used.

• To be effective, copper-containing compounds must have at least 50% copper.

• It is be advisable to apply a second treatment in spring, preferably before buds
begin to swell, but definitely before budbreak (when green color is first visible).

• Although symptoms of leaf curl are seen primarily in spring as new leaves develop,
there is little you can do to control the disease at this time. Normally, diseased
leaves fall off within a few weeks and are replaced by new healthy leaves unless it
is rainy.

• Development of leaf curl ceases when young tissue is no longer developing or
when weather turns dry and warm (80° to 85°F).

Ethan - can you chime in on FGM's Big Red?

It's too bad that USDA germplasm project only has KM for a red SA, when it sounds like it is less desirable than others that are out there.

A member here generously gave me some sticks of various SA that I'm really hoping will take.  I have a very strange microclimate, but I believe the weather is finally becoming favorable for my anoonas. (The Cherimoyas have yet to push a full new leaf, and the mangoes are just starting to push flower.  In contrast, there has been lots of activity on the stone fruits and citrus).

512
Thank you!  I had several others that haven't done a thing since grafting, so I was definitely excited about this one... I'll keep my hopes in check for another month or so.

I don't think I've said it yet, but this forum is invaluable and the sharing (knoweldge, plants, scions, seeds, etc) is truly insprirational.

Thanks all,

513
Thanks Thera!  How long before I would know for sure?  Graft was done 3/12/2013... here is photo from that day:

514
Is it a red cultivar?  ...

Cuban007 was referring to FGM's Big Red. :)

Doh  :P thanks for clarifying Thera!  I believe I have that grafted to the mother tree and hoping it takes... still need a couple more weeks to know for sure.  Between the kampong mauve and Big Red, the Big Red is the better cv then?

515
Is it a red cultivar?  I would really like a red SA in my yard... headed to Rio very soon and hope to pick up plenty of seeds from various cultivars, but don't remember seeing any red in the markets/fruit stands there?

516
This is my first attempt at grafting... SimonGrow gave me several pieces of budwood (behl cherimoya, selma, cangrajos sa).  Everything but the canrgejos has pushed.  This is Selma, grafted onto (unknown) seedling Cherimoya rootstock... question: when do I unwrap the parafilm?  Looks like all buds are pushing now.

Thanks,

517
Is anyone growing this in SoCal?  Should it be grafted to cherimoya stock for best performance here?  Looking to purchase tree or scions.

Thanks in advance.

Adam - do you have some Jabo trees available?  My wife is a Jaboticabaholic and needs a fix.  I sent you a PM as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Skin Allergic Reaction
« on: April 25, 2013, 07:44:24 PM »
Occasionally my lips will get puffy/sore/red after eating mango.  Not always and not severe and only on my lips.  Does not affect my hands (ie when touching mango tree, peeling fruit, etc).  My allergic reaction to poison oak, on the other hand, is severe and has not diminished over the years.

520
On naming the cultivar, I named it "Behl", I have not registered it yet, I will be contacting the appropriate person later this week or next. I heard it it may cost $2000 to register, if that is so, then I will not register, enjoy fruits as I dont want to get into commercialization or anything, just share with others. Will let you know what CRFG says

Sounds like a crowdfunding venture to me!  From all the activity on your tree-trimming party, I figure you must have sent out close to 2k scions - just ask everyone who received one to send $1 ea via paypal and cover the cost for you!  Or better yet, indiegogo.com - either way, I've got $5 for the sticks I got by way of SimonGrow.  In the meantime, I've got a healthy branch tagged as Behl* now.

*patent pre-pending.

521
I got Behl to take (looking forward to that) and AP appears to be doing just fine - both on branches of my "mother tree", I also got Selma going on its own rootstock... I have hopes for one of the cangrejos on a branch (one is definitely dead and one died with its host roostock).  I'll try to take a better look at it again tomorrow.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Seed sources
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:55:27 PM »
I have only ordered seeds from tradewinds and have had good results - everything I ordered has germinated.  I have also received seeds from the (generous members of this) forum.  Are you looking for a single source?  Anything in particular you're looking for?  I'd be happy to share some avocados and guava if you're looking for them.

523
So far none of my cangrejo's sa have pushed... I think I'm going to sit below them and go on a hunger strike until they do... really want this one to take!

The flowers are delicious!  And you can eat them after the stamen shows sign of pollination - having your cake and eating it too.

« on: April 21, 2013, 05:33:51 PM »
I have two feijoa of the same age planted within 20' of each other that fruit at very different rates - while they are different varieties, the flower at about the same rate.  The primary diffrence is that the one exposed to more wind and less sun fruits less heavily than the other.  They both receive the same amount of water and share the remaining environmental factors equally (i.e. pollinators, temperature, altitude, etc).
