The situation of Passifloras edulis Red Rover and Frederick.

Hi,

Scouting the web for Passifloras edulis Red Rover and Frederick I realized that most of the plants sold under these names are not the true varieties. For example look at this one which is more "Incense" than "Frederick" :

Most of these plants are  seedlings or simply have no direct link with true Frederick or Red rover. As we know that passifloras don't come true by seed I wondered how these plants can be sold under the name of the true hybrids Mr Patrick Worley created in Lincoln Acres many years ago.

I have an explanation : if these hybrids have not been patented by Mr Worley any dealer or nursery  can call "Frederick" and "Red Rover" any passiflora they want.

Does a Passiflora specialist on the forum have some informations about this point ?

i got a "possum purple"
from Wellspring gardens a couple of years ago.
i made another from a cutting.
ive only seen it flower once, and no fruit,
even though both plants have gotten huge.
Lots of biomass in the leaves, only 3 flowers and no fruit.

my passiflora incarnata has flowered several times, and given me fruit a couple of times
in the same time frame.

i think Wellspring  propagates by  tissue culture, but not positive...

Florida Hill supposedly does, but ive heard negative reports from them.

I can't speak with any sort of authority on this, but I get the sense that the Passifloras available here in California at local nurseries are the real thing (such as those propagated by La Verne and Monterey Bay Nursery) -- there's really no reason for them to do it from seed when the original cultivars are widely available for them to start with.  I'm sure they have several mother plants from which they do cuttings.

Do you know where this Nursery is located ?

I know this is an old thread, but that dealer was probably me.
I still have red rover and it's our families favorite.
Let me know if you'd like a cutting or a rooted start.
