Hey group, I am looking for true Nuathong annona. Let me know if you have it. I can buy tree, budwood, or exchange it for seeds, budwood, or plants. If you’re in SoCal or SoFla, I can pick up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Pineapple pleasure and Sugarloaf are shy bearers…period. Are they worth growing, absolutely. They’re a nice size fruit with amazing flavors. I am speaking from my personal experience in SoFla. I don’t have them in SoCal.

J, congrats on your retirement. Enjoy your time in Merida. Looks like you are having a blast. That area has great weather and fertile land to grow the fruits that we enjoy.

Nos vemos pronto!!!

Alex,

Great presentation. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge of mangoes. I think everyone in attendance was very appreciative of the relevant information that you shared and the passion that you conveyed in your mango discourse. Well done!!! Should you need anything, count on me in the future.

Dot

My neighbor has beautiful, productive avocado trees. He accomplished this by deep watering his trees. He has a watering systems in which he has pvc pipes going deep into the ground to provide that needed water for his mature avocado trees. So far, it's working beautifully for him.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ilama 'Genova Red'
« on: October 14, 2014, 07:28:52 PM »
I grafted several scions of Genova Red onto several different Cherimoya seedlings. They grew really well for several months and then the grafts all died after putting on a,couple feet of growth. Anyone else experience delayed graft failure with Ilama on Cherimoya rootstock?

Thanks,

Ed

Ed, that has happened to me many times with Cherimoya root stock. I've spoken with members of the CRFG about this and they have told me it is root rot. It has happened to me with Ilama, Custard apple, and  other Cherimoya varieties. In my case, the last thing to die it's the grafted scion.

Medjool is the best variety that I have tasted. They are large, meaty, and the seed is small relative to the size of the fruit. Here in SoCal they have Date Festival in the desert where they sell plenty of dates and date delights.

Mike, really I dont know if I will have room for more. I have so many other fruit trees right now that Im already pushing it from a up keep stand point, and a wife stand point! She thinks Im nuts!!! Ive got well over 50 potted fruit trees right now but alot of them will go into the ground when the house is finished.  I will keep a few of my prized citrus, figs, all the blueberries and the soon to attain tropical trees in pots. Im thinking of having a fruit tree sale my self to get rid of some stuff. My biggest challenge with the tropicals is going to be freeze protection the few nights it happens here.

A little bit of advice....

1.  You can't kiss all the pretty ladies,

2.   Don't become a slave to your plants.  If you do, what was once fun becomes grunt work.

So true in a lot of ways  ;)

It hit 100F at 11:00am and Santa Ana's are blowing

It is dry......Humidity went as low as 16%....Not cool at all >:(

I think a properly ripe Kesar, Imam Passand, and more so Sindhiri would be very very sweet. Sindiri is the sweetest mango from Pakistan. Unfortunately, we in So Cal need to wait to get these to our tasting. hopefully next year we will have all 3 of these.

I agree with Behl. Some of those Indian/Pakistani mangoes are really, really sweet.

Behl, give it a try. Sindhiri will do well here in SoCal as well as many of the Indian mango varieties.

3. Risk of losing a tree does not bother me because I have backup.

In life you always have to have backups and fall back plans A, B , C, D. We are now moving to fly by wire but the classic passenger airliner has three layers of redundancy to keep the airplane in the air. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundancy_%28engineering%29

That's why I always buy my faves in two's and three's

Hi guys just wanted to vent. Last weekend before the rains hit phx i decided to throw some Osmocote " slow " release fertilizer under the mulch of  my Lemon zest  and  Peach cobbler. Within a few days wilted crispy leaves  and that "wrinkling look " to the branches you start to see around that time - meaning  eminent Death !
Next all leaves turned brown dry and crispy on both trees .  I couldn't believe it - i was fuming at myself !
For those that are growing mangoes for a while now you know when you see that this tree is a goner - I may be wrong but that's my observation.

Was wondering for the last few days why i was feeling kinda down then i realized that it's a little bit like when a pet / family member dies
you kinda built a relationship with this tree (Watering , mulching , foliar spray , observing it weekly ) . I had gotten these trees through a whole summer in Phx 115 degree heat sometimes and i just realized it bothered me that they died. All that work / effort / time spent down the drain.

I did learn a few valuable lessons
. Use very little non - organics on my fruit trees (especially the mangoes)
. Spread very , very lightly 1/4 of what directions call for around the outer canopy
. If somethings working to make the trees grow steady but healthy keep doing it - why change????????????????

Lastly , follow my intuition to not use any because they were looking fine already with light regular  drenches of a mixture of fish / kelp and  molasses
I did replace the Lemon Zest yesterday with My 3 Gal Pin Saen Mun . Felt good to have that on hand at least !

Good news is next year i am after a sweet tart and another Lemon Zest

Can anyone relate or am i crazy for feeling this way ?
Thanks , now i feel better .

Good therapy is.....replace them as soon as you can. You will feel better. And yes, you're crazy Mangopsycho, just like the rest of us.

Have fun tomorrow JF!  Look forward to seeing your reviews.
Will Mallika and Maha redeem themselves from the July tasting...I guess its unfair to punish Mallika since the July "fermented" ones weren't CA grown.
I cant believe how small the ST Maui's are!

Are you sure those are ST Maui's?? Haven't seen them that small.

21
Cover it with some burlap for now or do what some nurseries do.... spray some water down white latex paint on it. It works.

22
Everything will be fine. Water them, cover them if newly planted. Usually in SoCal when this happens plants start pushing new growth. FYI great time to graft mangoes.

Nice arsenal. Now you need some Cherimoyas and Custard Apples to complete your annona artillery.

J, looks like your tree sales is going well. Last time I saw what you had to sell, everything looked really nice and healthy. Did Behl ever post anything???

JF,

I know you are busy.  But, if you could remember to send me a PM in spring when you have a mango available, I would appreciate it.  I don't always check the "Buy, Sell & Trade" section of the forum.  Any chance you may have a maha ready in spring?  I would take a 3 gal Pierce off your hand as well in spring if that is available.

Thanks

I might have some Maha by May or June and for sure 3 g Pierce.....I'll PM you.
