Kaiteri, 8-ball, Abbadabba, and Albertís Pride have been my favorites so far. Iíve tasted Coolidge, Mammoth, Nazametz, and a dozen or so seedlings, including some 30+ year old trees that were probably early CRFG plantings. There isnít a huge disparity in quality between most for the cultivars, so most of the newer, reputable named selections are pretty good. Kaiteri is probably the smoothest, least gritty selection Iíve tried. 8-ball has a great, smooth shape with more honey flavor than some of the others. Abbadabba, Albertís Pride, and Albert Supreme are very sweet, with a good deal of sourness. An excellent balance. Seedlings and landscape plants are worth exploring, too. There is a local plant that is grittier than normal, but has more anise flavor than is typical. A really interesting and tasty fruit.

It seems you have lots experience in trying different types. Among the ones you tried, which do you like best?

This has been the report out of FL and inland CA areas.
Itís too hot in the day. Its too hot at night.
Feijoa does better in cooler weather.
Friends try in Hawaii where it doesnt get over 90 or less than 55.
Doesnt work.
They need cooler nights or overall cooler weather.

Iíve seen Pete Kanaris recommend growing them in Florida so I assume they can grow there.  Are you having challenges actually getting the plant to grow or getting them to flower and set fruit?  They grow easily in containers if you are having challenges with soil conditions.

The ones I tried, all unnamed varities, just sat there and never grew much or bloomed, finally up and died.  Yet guavas, citrus, and an avocado, all in the ground, all grow well for me.  So it may just have been the individual feijoas that I got that weren't happy here for whatever reason.

Good to know that there are some NZ cultivars available.  I'll check.

Cheers!

This might be the reason the one i tried in hawaii did not taste good. Maybe needs cool temperature for a good taste.

Have you ever tried white pomegranate? Seed is very soft and the flesh is semi transparent. No tart, only sweet. I got a few only or I would sell it to you.

I have fruits that can also be harvested for seed. Feijoas are pretty cold hardy as they are not guavas, a whole different category of genus.

Fruit, seed, cutting, send pm if u interested.

The Feijoas I have attracts both bees, squirrels and birds because of the flower pedals. Not sure if many know this, but the flower pedals are sweet and also very delicious! So because of this, I think feijoas have no issues self being pollinated.

However, I do have 4 trees and its 2 different types, an oval fruit and another that is a complete round ball. The both are sweet, but the round one has less tart and appears morw sweet. Both delicious.

The only other feijoa i have had not from my property is one from hawaii. To me that one is below subpar. Not sweet, mushy texture, giving me the impression of a spoiled fruit, but it was not.

Is it pink flesh inside? I have yellow guavas like that with pink flesh, it is sweet and with pleasant guava aroma.

What is the best tasting feijoa variety? My home came with a couple mature trees and fruit of one is completely round while the others are oval. Both types are very delicious, the round one being less tart and more sweet. I see that online nursery now offers new varieties like: kakariki, takaka, anatoki, etc.

I also tasted feijoa/ pineapple guava from hawaii and it was not sweet, bland and nasty tasting. Not sure what type it was, but was oval shapped.

What are people's experiences with feijoas? I added pictures of my recent harvest.

I bought a vernon and added subelle, seed grown cutting (fremont), younghans gold, redlands.

I also attempted to add other varieties but it didnt take: supersweet, lemon gold, and i forgot the rest.

My tree grows strong outdoor and fruits nicely. The flavor of the different types seems similar and only slightly different, can only tell when eaten side by side. They all taste creamy and delicious!

The fruit is smooth skin, some online articles say it could be Dr.White. Flavor is sweet and good, but I like the lemony taste of chaffey more. The smooth one is vietnamese, and the other ones are chaffey (some chaffey are hybrid since I cross pollinate vietnamese and chaffey).
