Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Zill 40-26 Fruit
« on: April 17, 2024, 06:08:50 PM »
The one I pulled out had horrible root growth.

Not sure if that was why mine seemed so stunted.

Oh well it will live life in a pot now.

Yeah I wouldnt worry about that wound at all.

Ive made worse damage with failed grafts.

Mangoes are hard to kill, especially orange sherbet.

Ive hacked away at mine relentlessly and my cats use it as a climbing/scratching post.

Still growing like crazy and fruiting.

I pulled mine out and stuck it in a pot.

Im trying to eliminate all the “not sure” producers in my yard.

Alex is in one of the best places for mangoes, this far west it’s completely different.

I have one but its small so no flowers only growth this year.
A quick search will show many posts.  This 2017 post by Squam256 is not the oldest but is a great clue to where you could get the answer to your question.  I suggest you ask him, he is active on the forum and has been fruiting this variety for several years (since 2017).
Julie seedling, produced poorly at Gary Zill's property. I have one that set very well for me this year; stripped most of the fruit offnit but left a couple. Sap Aroma is Gary-esque. Appears to be mid season.

Im guessing this means Im not going to keep this one since Gary is a few blocks from me.

I take that back. I see a couple of fruits so.

GAME ON!

Tree said nope not this year.

My Day and Wurtz are picking up the slack though thats for sure.

Looks like it was rubbing on something.

Fruit drop is normal though.

7
Rosa is a must have for this.

Mine has been flowering/fruiting since November.

Almost ready to pick my first mango.

Not top tier but this one will flower every year no doubt.

M4 gets my vote due to the taste, disease resistance, and productivity. Honestly thought It wouldn't pass my crazy requirements in my yard but its a keeper.

Sugarloaf is a hot mess for me. I still havent had a mango that ripened correctly for me even from Walter. I ripped a full tree out from my yard this year cause I want something that actually produces mangoes.

Still need more time to evaluate 40-26 but it grows like it belongs in a retirement home.

Yeah its going to be 2030  before my 40-26 gets to a small tree size.

M4 grows the fastest in my yard but seems to respond well to being heavily pruned and still be able to flower and hold fruit.

Sugarloaf needs some kind of production warning label.

I dont think that variety is for backyard growers at all.

At least not me thats for sure.

Mine was about 3" thick trunk and only had about 4 set fruit.

Wasnt meant for my yard at all.

I fell for hyped fruit trees too often the last few years.

Lesson learned.

I usually start mine in a plastic zip lock bag with a paper towel then move into a peat, perlite, pine fine mix.
Do you move it after it is sprouted? or just after it shows roots?

Yup when I see it sprout I get it into a pot.

Ive had great success with this method.

SH 3640 was my favorite to grow.

Super productive.

Down here mine is in the forming fruit phase.

Just make sure to water it crazy amounts when flowering.

I wish I did not plant Butterscotch.

Seems that most of us are having issues with production.

Some of us are trying other saps around Butterscotch to pollinate better.

I have 4 close by and in the past few years in the ground had one sap.

While my Salis Wood doesnt stop.

Im sure Butterscotch has top notch fruit but if it doesnt produce any whats the point?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Campbell White Sapote HELP?
« on: March 27, 2024, 07:57:50 AM »
JR561, I have two plants of the Campbell from Julian. The older one is about 1 years old, it did not look that strong/healthy initially but after 1 year now it has acclimated to full sun in my yard in SoCal.

I'll try to take a photo of the two plants, the 1 year old, and recent 1 month old plant I purchased. I haven't given it any fertilizer yet, just up potted the older plant when I saw that it was over the shock of shipping.

No doubt mine had to acclimate to my yard.

I didnt think it would make it past the first year.

Ive been growing one for the past 2 years and it absolutely hates full sun.

Its wanted to die a number of time.

I have extremely low expectations for thus variety.

I think many things we were sold during 2020-2022 were over hyped.

24
Alano, Salas Wood and Makok should fruit most of the year. They all can be kept smaller.

I would think on Alano with enough space would easily keep a family in Saps most of the year once it gets rolling.
