Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sooty Mold, Pests, and Treatments
« on: February 20, 2024, 09:16:49 AM »
For mealy bugs and spider mites I use LADA imidicloprid drench and LUCID abamectin spray. I use liquids, both are ROTAM brand. Abamectin is a really good insecticide/miticide.

Fungus gnats are dead easy to get rid of. They are related to mosquitoes, so I put mosquito dunks in my greenhouse pond, wait two days, then use the water to water my plants. Kills the fungus gnat larvae in the soil.

Carolyn

Would it be fine if I apply the LADA imidicloprid drench via foliar application?

Imidacloprid works great for some scale but not mealybugs for whatever reason.  Hort oil or soap spray works for a bit but it seems you can never exterminate them.  At least, not in my greenhouse.  Outdoors they are preyed upon and that keeps the populations small enough to control.

I use soil drench and sprayed imidacloprid.  It kills bees so don't use it anytime is is blooming or will soon.

Is there a particular formulation or brand that you'd recommend ? (Thank You for the Reply)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sooty Mold, Pests, and Treatments
« on: February 17, 2024, 07:21:03 PM »
Good Evening, I am posting a thread for friends to join in and share their advice or experience with insects such as, Aphids, Mealybugs, Whiteflies, etc.. That are causing sooty mold on our Fruit Trees. This is a perpetual problem that I would like to try to figure out the best solution to manage. At this point I am way past using "neem" as it never works or lasts. I am reading about imidacloprid insecticide, does anyone have any experience with this and if it is worth a try, via soil drench or foliar spray. Ideas, Thoughts, Concerns?

I think it's likely to be Syzygium cumini. I think one or two people have fruited it, maybe Hunter Sims or Kelly Gabrisch?  I haven't committed to planting mine out because it just seems like a pretty mediocre species IMO.

I have fruited it out, bought the same seeds from tradewinds fruit, it is different from standard Jamun, Its fruits are more circular in shape compared to the Jamun's Oval, The BB is slightly sweeter but also slightly more astringent. Definitely very very close in taste to Jamun. Cold Hardiness seems the same and does well in Central Florida. Worth growing as a novelty if you have the space, If not. Stick with Jamun as the Jamun fruits are larger and have more meat on them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rollinia Hand Pollination Support Request
« on: September 28, 2023, 05:06:35 PM »
You gotta collect female pollen, usually at night, and separate from all other plant material. Put in sealed small container with desiccant pack, and keep in fridge til the following night or next couple of nights. Then use paint brush to pollinate female flowers.  All flowers start off female, then turn male.

You can break off a wing/petal of the flower to better get inside of female flowers, which should only be barely open. If a flower has fully opened, it is male.

Is the Desiccant pack an absolutely necessary step?

Got my monkey orange today.  Nice size, was wrapped professionally,  plant arrived in perfect.  An overall excellent buying experience for anyone interested in his selection.
By the way, is monkey orange self fertile?

Great to hear! I do believe the Monkey Orange is self fertile, as the tree I harvested the seeds from does not have any other trees nearby.

I have seedlings for sale as well if anyone is interested.

on the higher price side but still reasonable in my opinion as the seeds took about 10 months to sprout up, also had to have them imported from indonesia.

picture shown is of a kepel on the smaller side. I like to under promise and over deliver, seedlings are slightly larger than image shown.

Thesims, looks like a great Etsy shop. Are all of the scions from fruiting trees? I couldn’t tell by reading the description. Thanks!

Yes I will make more clear in descriptions, But every cutting I sell is from a already fruited tree. Thanks

Have you rooted the cinnamon cuttings before?  What kind of success rates are you getting?  Also, do you sell fresh seeds or small seedlings?

I have rooted them using clonex, they are more difficult than most but do able if you have good shade, high humidity, and never let the soil dry out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I Cut my Inga Laurina Air Layers?
« on: April 29, 2023, 01:48:09 PM »
I did them about a month ago, this is what the air layers are looking like at the moment, not sure if its quite time to cut them yet. Should I give it another week or so? or would I be fine to try and cut some now to pot up? Cheers 4/29/2023

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Green Sapote Tree
« on: April 21, 2023, 08:03:03 AM »
Hey?!

I got a green sapote cultivar from a really nice grower in South FL....it's called Whitman...I suppose old Willy Whitman had it....notorious for getting the best of the best if he could....I've also heard there was a study done on the brix level, of the fruits of this cultivar "whitman", and it was off the meat rack sweet!!!

I am willing to share budwood at a later date, but my two trees need to grow a little before I cut them...so maybe ready to distribute budwood in August of this year, fruit Gods willing...

How is your green sapote doing? Has it fruited for you ?

Top 10:
Coconut Cream
Guava Mango (Guamango)
Pickering
Orange Sherbet
Rosigold (tasted like floral roses to me)
Lemon Zest
Nam Doc Mai
PPK (lemon meringue)
Buttercream
And believe it or not I like the shitty fibrous turpetine mango

RECENTLY PLANTED
Creme Brulee (I want to know more about this variety and haven't tasted it)
Casturi Mango
Lancetilla
Irwin

I don't have a shortage of planting space so I did a couple less desirable varieties.

Hello, would it be illegal to sell scions (not plants) of a patented variety of mango such as those of Zills nurseries (coco creme, etc...)
