Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold adapted strains of fruits?
« on: June 25, 2025, 11:14:36 PM »
I recently joined a local food forest and want to put in some rare almost subtropicald into the forest, i have a number of ideas but i also wonder if there are hardy strains of more common fruits from say, the highlands of south brazil. A myrtacea Inaturalist search around Urupema in Samta Catarina (according to google one of the coldest places) there is strawberry guava and campomanesia xanthanocarpa nearby, and this makes me wonder what other species might’ve creeped down there?

Also, does anyone have any specially cold hardy strains of stuff? The food forest shouldn’t ever realistically get below 20f

Thank you so much! i recently became part of a local food forest and i hope to introduce some rare and exotic fruits there!

6
how many of them are potentially lightly snow tolerant? also are the temperatures from the areas of the mother trees or seedlings that you have personally tested?

7
Roughly how many pounds per box?

8

is the shelf life good enough for commercial potential?

Shelf life is good, but the fruits bruise easy and not many people like them. They're not a fruit you really want to eat a ton of imo. It is in the novelty sector for me.
ah, well theres usually a reason many fruits arent commerical

Supposedly, A. Scleroderma is one of the better annonas. Have there been any attempts to hybridize it with cherimoya, reticulata, ilama, etc.?

I was looking online and I found cuttings of a type called 'Octoberfest'  https://www.etsy.com/listing/1779870690/two-cuttings-of-the-tastiest-strawberry
i dont have any named cultivars, although i have access to hundreds of trees and i know of some that are pretty tasty
