Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting wax jambu help
« on: November 24, 2022, 07:59:11 AM »
I have a rare seedling wax jambu that I want to clone as Iím somewhat worried it could die unexpectedly, and I want to hedge that risk. Itís about two feet tall and growing as a single leader not branching. Iím thinking I could tip prune it to induce branching and then graft the cutting. So then the question:

Does anyone have experience grafting wax jambu and what methods did you employ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Salak first flowers, palm city FL
« on: November 10, 2022, 10:06:41 AM »
Went out today to assess yard post storm Nicole, noticed one of my salaks is flowering. Seems of all the things this took a beating as the long fronds catch the wind while shallow weak rootsÖ if planting out where high winds are a concern place in protected area 👍

Wondering if these are male or female flowers or still too soon to tell?

Hereís a great link on different types:

Originally bought these seeds from Han sun as ďhoney salakĒ and have a few growing out in my yard now, hoping to try this fruit someday and todays news reignites the hope!

Hey Forum,

I'm going to bring a couple rare "Painter" hybrid annonas to the treasure coast rare fruit club meeting tomorrow for the auction table. Bidding will start at 10$ each. They are in 1 gallon pots.

Here's how to get there its in port st Lucie and starts at 7:00pm

Really curious to try this, as I enjoy dried figs and dates in my morning oatmeal and on their own which I hear itís similar?

If anyone is selling please reach out.

Currently I use a silver sharpie marker to write/identity what is planted in my black plant pots. It has worked well in the past, though recently Iím having an issue where Iíll buy multiple packs of silver sharpie markers and they seem to be defective/dried out/the flow of ink isnít constant.

So looking to see if anyone can recommend a better permanent marker brand? My favorite means of identifying the plants is permanent silver/white lettering on the black pots. Iím open to new ideas also.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID this plant, a tropical edible tuber?
« on: September 25, 2022, 05:45:13 PM »
Hey Forum,

I was visiting a friend recently and remarked on the leaves of a plant Iíd never seen before and he gave me an off shoot of what he described as ďI donít know what the hell itís called but it produces a giant edible potatoe and here grow one too.Ē

Can anyone ID this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya in FL anecdote
« on: September 24, 2022, 07:52:26 AM »
Earlier this year I pollinated my el bumpo with Lisa atemoya pollen and got two flowers to set. Last week the fruit fell off prematurely. Pictured is two small el bumpos left and center next to a small geffner. Both el bumpos softened up and the larger one was edible and nice tasting, no grit with a almost bubble gum flavor. The seeds look viable and Iím excited to plant these out and see what comes of these hybrid cherimoya x atemoya seeds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are there any fruit hunters in Haiti?
« on: July 03, 2022, 09:16:51 PM »
As the title says, are there any fruit hunters or seed sellers based in Haiti? If so please respond or DM me.

Hey Forum,

Wanted to put this out there and see what others may be experiencing, but for two seasons now Iíve been trying to cross Ďpainterí fka Ďcherilataí with other annonas in my collection and Iíve come up completely empty handed when itís used as pollen parent. Iíve tried painter x sugar apple, painter x geffner, painter x el bumpo, painter x dream and nothing sticks when used as pollen. Iíve found painter is receptive to sugar apple pollen and Iíve gotten a few fruits to set as female parent. Has any one else tried these crosses and achieved fruit set as pollen parent?

This is an observation, but it sent me down a rabbit hole and I came across this article :!po=0.925926

Evidently, sometimes Annona hybrids can be naturally occurring Triploid or Tetraploid variants which can have an effect on their ability to reproduce. In this paper it is mentioned that:

So Iím curious if itís possible that ĎPainterí may be a triploid hybrid which would explain why none of the pollen is working 🤷‍♂️ I guess to confirm this would require a flow cytometer to karyotype a leaf sample 🤔.

Hey Forum,

Iím looking for seeds or bud wood of annona acutiflora. I know this is a rare one but willing to trade for other rare annonas or purchase seeds or budwood. Sulcata grove had one at one point but theirs unfortunately died recently. I did purchase seeds from them of this previously but mine did not germinate and it was before I got better at germinating annonas.

Any leads on this is appreciated!

Hey guys,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ice Cream Mango acting weird
« on: February 20, 2022, 05:36:14 PM »

About half the fruit forming on the tree has blush on it, Iíve never seen ice cream mangos with blush could this be some metaxenic effect maybe?

Then hereís a panicle that grew leaves at the end and is flushing again off the tip of the panicle 🤷‍♂️😂

Chewy Easy Peel Sugar Apple

Selling scions 5$ each 6 scion minimum with 10$ shipping. Sale ends Thursday 2/24 at 5:30pm all orders will be shipped out on 2/25 with tracking number provided. First come first served via direct message time stamp while scions last.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee erinose mite question
« on: January 14, 2022, 05:10:28 PM »
Why does this mite only effect lychee? Iím suprised longan and other plants arenít effected 🤷‍♂️

Think itís important to understand the pests preference for lychee to understand how to possibly treat it.

Going to eat these avocados in next day or so, if anyone wants the seeds Iíll send them to you for 20$ , available to US residents only. DM me if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit from my yard.
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:38:23 PM »
Hereís a seedling papaya of waimanolo x-77. I have two of these trees growing now and I think itís interesting to note that my fruits are more melon shaped than the x-77 solo ďpearĒ shape images Iíve seen online. Also my trees arenít dwarf like x-77 is said to be. Iíve nicknamed it ďtree cantaloupeĒ because the flesh is firmer than average papaya, like a cantaloupe , and the flavor is like a mild mango meets passion fruit sans tartness. I was also growing the sunrise solo papaya but Iíve since culled them because I prefer the x-77 seedlings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nice Read on the Johnny Appleseed of Jackfruit
« on: November 03, 2021, 11:14:01 AM »
By Hey Forum,

Came across this article and thought it was pretty interesting

Also there is a statement in the article that grafted jackfruits donít live as long as seedlings, has anyone else seen this to be true?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with plant id
« on: October 30, 2021, 12:32:24 PM »
Hey guys,

Silly question but a while back I planted out some tamarind seeds, and Royal poinciana seeds and lost track of the pots in this section of my yard for a bit. So wondering if this is a tamarind, weed, or Royal poincianna?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does Microcitrus Papuana have seeds?
« on: October 14, 2021, 09:52:04 AM »
Maybe a dumb question, but are there seeds inside the microcitrus papuana fruits? From the pics and videos I have seen of this citrus I donít see any visible seeds 🤷‍♂️. I would be interesting in growing it from a seed if there are any available.
