Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jamie Rose Avocado
« on: May 27, 2018, 01:51:14 PM »
Any more info on "Jamie Rose" avocado?

Yesterday I toured the La Verne Nursery (wholesale grower) with the Los Angeles Chapter, California Rare Fruit Growers.
The nursery tour was lead by Daniel Nelson, Director of Nursery Operations.
CRFG members were allowed to purchase trees, I bought a Jamie Rose Avocado tree.

La Verne is growing this new grafted Avocado tree from scion wood provided from LA Chapter CRFG Chairman, Tony Stewart.
The original tree is growing in Hollywood, CA and Tony has named the "new" variety Jamie Rose.

La Verne had plenty of the trees available for $20. ea. Several LA CRFG members purchased a Jamie Rose. The tag was misspelled.

Daniel Nelson and Tony Stewart

I asked Daniel when would we be seeing Jamie Rose at Lowe’s, etc.
He said not in the near future.
He feels it needs to be DNA tested to make sure it is not already a named variety that the name was forgotten.
Of course Tony is excited to see a tree he named after his daughter.
The fruit looks good, it has an interesting story, and knowing it came from Tony and La Verne grafted it on Mexicola seedling root stock... plus $20. it was a must buy IMO.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ventura, CA largest Cherimoya tree
« on: March 29, 2018, 10:07:28 PM »
That is what the owner says.

I know nothing about Cherimoyas, except for attending a Cherimoya tasting about a year ago.

The tree owner could not give me any information on variety or history.

Nobody hand pollinates it. Only a monkey could pick the fruit.

To me the fruit  tastes as good or better than the best I tasted at Irvine tasting.

Which variety does it look like?

Citrus General Discussion / Ground breaking ACP discovery

December 13, 2018

“In a ground-breaking discovery encompassing six years of research, an international team of scientists led by UC Davis chemical ecologist Walter Leal announced they've identified the sex pheromone of the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), an insect that feeds on citrus and transmits the bacteria that causes the deadly citrus greening disease known as Huanglongbing (HLB).”

Citrus General Discussion / Learn About Growing Citrus Class
« on: March 08, 2017, 09:32:45 PM »
Today I attended a Learn About Growing Citrus class at the University of California, Hansen Research and Extension Center, Santa Paula, CA.

Dr. Faber is the soils/water/subtropical crops advisor for Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

His primary crop involvements are avocado and citrus and is currently evaluating various subtropical tree varieties for their economic viability in coastal environments. He also studies soil and water quality issues.

The class was mainly about how to grow and care for citrus trees. We also got to taste a variety of the citrus growing at the Hansen Research and Extension Center.

The tasting winner was the Page Citrus Hybrid.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango trees for the SoCal masses
« on: November 23, 2016, 10:33:48 PM »
On November 19th I attended the CRFG Los Angeles Chapter Field Trip – Nursery walk, tour, lecture at La Verne Nursery Inc. (wholesale sales only) located in Piru, CA.

This was my second visit. I previously attended a tour in March 2014 with several Tropical Fruit Forum members.

My main hobby interest is Dragon Fruit, and I wanted to see what is new and hang out with fellow CRFG members.

We met outside the big La Verne temperature controlled, humidity controlled greenhouse.

The tour guide was Daniel Nelson, Director of Operations.

I am sorry, but I did not take notes and my memory is not good on details. I did take some pictures and some of attendees are active on Facebook and may be able to answer detail questions.

A couple of weeks ago at the Hansen Research Center, I saw that the staff had planted a couple new trees in the demonstration garden..

One was the patented Gem Avocado tree.

The other was a California Pride Mango tree.

Has anybody heard of "California Pride"?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Donovan Avocado
« on: January 22, 2016, 12:18:44 AM »
My CRFG friend Donovan found an unique Avocado tree growing in Los Angeles.

The fruit looks different than most avocados seen in Southern California. It appears to be a West Indian variety.

The tree is a medium size tree growing in a parkway. The tree's foliage looks green and healthy.

"A number of fruits I took pictures of on several trips (5-6) to SoCal in 2015. Was trying to get a good picture of various fruits. (Made a alternative crop lecture) Most of these come from Fullerton, SD/Quail, or LA Arbo."

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is new with Tim Thompson?
« on: December 14, 2015, 04:51:48 PM »
With all the recent talk about mango tree delivery from Tim, I decided to stop procrastinating and see about picking up the mango tree I order over a year ago.

I ordered my mango tree at a CRFG meeting, where Tim was the guest speaker, and participants were allowed to order trees at a group discount and the understanding that the trees would not be available until sometime in 2015. Later on it was learned that during a bad wind storm, Tim lost a bunch of grafted seedlings which meant that people with orders made before mine would be filled first and my order would take longer.

Four days ago, I sent an email to SoCal Plant Breeders asking when could I pick up my mango tree order. I got a prompt reply saying I should give Tim a call and schedule a time to pick-up my tree. I called Tim and we arranged for a pick up today. I live only 15 miles away and was planning on making a COSTCO run today which is on the way.

When I got to Tim's house, I saw a bunch of mango trees in the front.

I was also surprised to see Cereus peruvianus cactus everywhere!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing Mangos in Ventura County California
« on: September 02, 2015, 07:05:13 PM »
Today I stumbled across a small row of Mango trees at the UC Hansen Trust Research Center.

I don't know how I missed them in my previous walks down the several rows of the farm's avocado tree collection.

The 8 - 10 Mango trees were unlabeled and planted next to a row of big fig trees.

The UC Hansen Trust Research Center is located near Santa Paula, California which is located 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 14 miles east of Ventura.
It is the geographical center of Ventura County and is situated in the rich agricultural Santa Clara Valley. Santa Paula is known as or claims to be the “Citrus Capital of the World”.

The UC Hansen Trust Research Center is surrounded by miles of citrus and avocado orchards. So this small sample of Mango trees should give a person an idea how Mango trees will grow unprotected, un-pampered, in basic citrus/avocado grove conditions in Ventura County.

Citrus General Discussion / David Karp - Fruit detective

Today at the CRFG Los Angeles chapter meeting, I got to hear pomologist David Karp talk about different citrus and the University of California - Riverside Citrus Variety Collection.

Very interesting! I might have to add some more citrus varieties to my garden.

Last week my wife and I stopped at the famous Leoda's Kitchen for lunch on Maui.

We checked out the fruit at a fruit and juice stand.

I and two other CRFG members decided to visit Leo Manuel.

We were interested in seeing his garden and Dragon Fruit and other cacti with good tasting fruit he is growing.

We were also interested in his Mango trees.
