Tropical Fruit Discussion / how to deseed seedy fruits
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:12:24 PM »
Hi all,

Some fruits are really tasty but inconvenient to eat out hand because of all the seeds, so they may be better suited for processing. I am just wondering if there is a good general way to easily remove seeds from the flesh in seedy fruits?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / fruits for dry tropical/subtropical climate
« on: February 11, 2015, 08:38:11 AM »
Hi,

Can anyone give suggestions of species with good eating fruits for dry tropical or subtropical climate, with emphasize on the word dry. And preferably species that would be possible to grow successfully in a pot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Uvaia fruits and fruit flies
« on: December 18, 2013, 10:10:18 AM »
Hi,

I found these 2 website that talks about Uvaia and the problem with fruit flies, and some yummy recipes at the end. With google translation, I understood most of it. There are some interesting ideas about how to remove the worms inside the fruits before eating them - eating the fruits that is. I think she also said something about that one option is just to don't bother and let the worms fortify the fruits with extra protein. I personally wouldn't do that. I think it will affect the taste. She also said that it's hard to find Uvaia that are not sour, but I know they exist.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / most productive jaboticaba

Hello,

Does anyone know which of all the different jaboticaba types is the most productive one?

Hi,

I don't think this has been discussed here before.

I read some posts recently about mangosteen, and now wonderful this fruit is. I have never had one so I am only imagine. But from what I have read wouldn't mangosteen be the most likeable and sellable fruit to average Joe on the street? So I was just wondering, in a tropical climate, if one had enough land (and patience) and wanting to plant some fruit trees for profit would mangosteen be the most profitable fruit tree to grow?

Same question for a sub-tropical climate. But I have no clue about that myself. It's all very hypothetical to me at this point and it would be interesting to know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruits not bothered by fruit flies
« on: September 09, 2013, 09:55:17 AM »
Hi,

I cannot think of many fruits that are not bothered by fruit flies of any kind. As a matter of fact, I can only think of 2 species:

Cambuca
Monkey orange

If anyone kind think of other fruits that are resistant to fruit flies, please chime in. It would be interesting to know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Human urine as a low-tech bait for fruit flies
« on: September 06, 2013, 04:10:11 PM »
Perhaps this is an alternative to bagging fruits to keep the fruit flies away.

Here is a link to that research document:

 http://journals.fcla.edu/flaent/article/view/75260/72918‎

The West Indian fruit fly (Anastrepha obliqua) seems to be the bad guy for E. stipitata - at least in Brazil in a research paper I read. E. stipitata was the fruit I first looked at concerning fruit flies, and that's how it all started for me reading more and more about fruit flies.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dermatobotrys saundersii
« on: August 29, 2013, 12:49:20 PM »
Hi,

Just thought I would post about a rare African fruiting little plant - Dermatobotrys saundersii. It looks really exotic too:

The fruit is edible but not particularly sweet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mystery Indian dried fruit
« on: August 25, 2013, 03:08:16 PM »
Hi,

I got a bag of these dried fruits from India yesterday. They are called Prasadam fruits. I looked that up and it's not really the name of the fruit, but it's a word with spiritual meaning. I would really like to know what fruit it is. They are sweet and nice to chew on. They tasted a little like a sweet raisin. The seconds picture is of the seeds inside.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / white sapote grafting - video and questions
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:37:32 AM »
Hi,

I just watched this video to learn about cleft grafting with white sapote (it's the 2nd part of the video):

WhiteSapoteGrafting.m4v

Two things I don't understand about the cleft grafting in the video:

1. Why don't you put the scion in the middle of the stem?
2. Isn't it ideal if the scion and rootstock have the same thickness when you do a cleft graft?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / what's up with the abiu leaves
« on: August 16, 2013, 08:49:03 AM »
Hi,

Not sure what these brown spots are on some of my abiu leaves. Is this anything to worry about?

These abius of mine are among the plants I care most of in my collection. So almost everyday I check them out for anything unusual. Perhaps I am just overly nervous about some random leaf discoloration.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / L-shaped root in pots
« on: July 24, 2013, 10:39:39 AM »
Hi,

I don't think this has been discussed here before. I have always wondered if it's safe (or even the best choice) to cut off a root that's starting to flatten out because of confinement in a too small pot. Literally speaking, I have a root shaped as an "L" and I want to cut it into an "I" shape.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / unhappy abiu
« on: April 11, 2013, 11:09:25 PM »
Hi,

Can someone tell me what's missing to make this unhappy abiu happy again? I know there is a way to read the leaf to determine what elements are lacking but I don't have that knowledge.

Thanks,

Tomas

Tropical Fruit Discussion / good fruit for juicing
« on: March 25, 2013, 08:31:58 AM »
Hi all,

I wonder which of these fruits would make the best juice (or smoothie).

Eugenia uvalha/Eugenia pyriformis
Eugenia stipitata
Eugania victoriana

I know all these are mighty sour so sugar would have to be added. But do any of these Eugenia fruits also have any complexity in flavor or are they just plain sour? And what about Campomanesia species - how well are they suited for making juice? I am asking because I plan to grow a smaller plant (container-grown) for the only purpose of making tasty juice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / propagating achachairú from cuttings
« on: March 02, 2013, 04:19:32 PM »
Hi all,

I came a cross an article about propagating achachairú from cuttings. I tried to use Google translation on the text to get the context (http://zamo-oti-02.zamorano.edu/tesis_infolib/2004/T1998.pdf). I believe it said that even without any treatments, they got 10% success rate. If that's the case I would say that's not bad and what if that works on other Garcinia species too?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / unknown Ziziphus
« on: February 26, 2013, 07:14:08 PM »
Hi all,

I have seeds sprouting of an unknown Ziziphus species from Brazil. I was just wondering if Ziziphus can fruit on its own regardless of what Ziziphus species it is.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia leitonii
« on: February 24, 2013, 09:29:43 PM »
Hi,

Eugenia leitonii has never been talked about before on this forum. I would be very interested if anyone knows if the fruit is good in comparison with other Eugenia species. All I have is what Lorenzi wrote in Brazilian Fruits & Cultivated Exotics: "slightly sweet flavor, somewhat tannic". That book may not be correct all the time with the taste descriptions.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / share your pests
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:22:18 PM »
Hi,

I thought it would be fun to see if people could share their pictures of pests and bugs. It would basically be pictures of what you don't want to see on your plants. I will start with some mealy bugs:

The mealy bugs just loved to chew on basul as you can see.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical seeds and their tenderness
« on: November 30, 2012, 02:08:16 PM »
Hi,

I have been wondering how well tropical seeds can handle temporary cold for a few days, say down to 40F. Also, is frost lethal for tropical seeds even for less than a few hours? I ask because if I have seeds shipped to an area which currently has low temperatures in the 30-40F range, I would not like them to die while in the hands of the postal service.

Thanks,

Tomas

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Myrciaria and chlorine tolerance
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:36:30 PM »
Hi,

If my memory doesn't fail me I think Adam posted something similar here some time ago about how different Myrciaria species tolerate city water. Here is from my own observations. Earlier tonight, I took a look at 3 of my Myrciaria species after being watered with city water for a few weeks. Myrciaria vexator does the worse. Myrciaria cauliflora is not far behind.  Then without comparison comes Myrciaria trunciflora ahead of the group - seems totally oblivious of the chlorine and other impurities in the city water. I prefer plants that are as carefree as possible so M. trunciflora is now my favorite.

Myrciaria vexator

Myrciaria cauliflora

Myrciaria trunciflora

I hope someone finds this information useful.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / abiu with brown leaf tip
« on: November 09, 2012, 10:20:41 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone know what causes abiu to get brown leaf tips? I have checked the soil often and it's never dried out so it cannot be because of too little water. And it cannot be sun burn either because they still grow in the shade.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tomas
