There are these purple spots on some of the leaves and more have been showing up slowly. There are a lot of temperature swings in the greenhouse but there isn’t full sun.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Any good inexpensive but effective grow lights?
« on: February 21, 2024, 07:02:16 PM »
Currently moving into an apartment and, there aren’t exactly floor to ceiling south facing windows. Anyone have any suggestions for discrete indoor grow lights that would give my trees a little help during winter without looking like an industrial grower.

I had some cheap Amazon strip lights but almost all of my plants in the grow tent stopped growing And even started dropping leaves so I took them out. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Transitioning indoor trees outside
« on: April 19, 2023, 12:59:53 PM »
Hey everybody. I am looking to move my trees outdoors and get them acclimated to the outside, but I am unsure how cold many of them can handle. I read a lot of articles about how they can handle frosts, but I obviously don't want to stress them out. What is a minimum nighttime temperature for things like acerola, eugenias and plinia that will acclimate them without stressing them too much?

Our forecast calls for around 50 as a low at night and then 30 this weekend.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba: is this normal?
« on: October 22, 2022, 07:30:46 PM »
I just brought in my sabara inside for the winter a few months ago and it has never dropped leaves like this before. I had sprayed it with neem a few months ago but it is starting to drop leaves now. Will it come back?

It gets some sunlight and it isn’t watered heavily because it is inside

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing passion fruit up a tree
« on: October 20, 2022, 06:35:00 PM »
I am growing passion fruit in a container and it is inside for this winter. It has started clinging to a small tree I have nearby. Would it be ok to let it grow or could it be harmful to the tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Greenhouse vanilla growing
« on: October 08, 2022, 09:59:47 AM »
There is a vanilla orchid growing at my colleges greenhouse. We are looking to trellis it on something, but there aren’t a lot of options. Would a wood or metal trellis work better or an actual tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit has spider mites
« on: August 07, 2022, 01:57:20 PM »
Hello all. My starfruit seedling is a few years old and it has grown really well except for now. It got spider mites during early spring and usually they clear up when I move them outside but it has not done well, even after using insecticidal soap. I have been spraying the leaves down often and making sure it is fertilized. Do you think a neem oil drench would help?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava tree sending runners.
« on: July 19, 2022, 10:07:10 PM »
Hello everyone. My red malaysian guava tree is 5 years old I believe and is in a pot. It has been flowering for 2 years on runners that were not the original plant. I have been trying to cut back the runners every time they show up but I am wondering if I should just let it grow into a bush. It is a cutting now grafted so the runners are the same genetically.

thank you all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Treating mosaic virus with aspirin.
« on: June 01, 2022, 11:46:48 AM »
Hello all, I am very sad to say my peanut butter fruit tree has mosaic virus, and it isn’t exactly easy to find these plants here in the Midwest. I have seen some anecdotal advice to water your plant with aspirin water. I will be doing 2 aspirin tablets per gallon of water to see whether or not it helps. I will also be pruning back all the infected growth and keeping it isolated.

(Mosaic symptom: “variegation” and spindle leaves)

(Before pruning)

(After pruning)

Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beetles eating roots of potted plants
« on: May 08, 2022, 10:05:07 PM »
Hello. I have been moving my potted trees outside and have found a few beetles in two of my pots, and I suspect there are more in the rest eating the roots. Does anyone know a good way to get rid of them? I would repot and clean the roots of all of them, but I am nearing finals week here at my college, and so that isn't a feasible option.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating Plinia
« on: April 06, 2022, 07:27:26 PM »
Hey everyone, I am expecting some plinia inflata seeds sometime this week, what is the best way to germinate them? Should I just leave them in the medium they come in until the sprout?

Hello! My Jaboticaba (sabara) is pushing new growth as spring comes around here in the midwest, and it is warped looking. Anyone know what may be causing this? I have been watering it with RO recently but in the past it has gotten pretty hard water. It is in a cooler location (around 50 to 60 C at night) and is in a southern window.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best annona for pot culture
« on: March 28, 2022, 06:13:19 PM »
Hello! I am considering different annonas to grow once I have enough space. I already have soursop, rollinia and cherimoya seedlings. What are some annona species that do in a pot, and taste good? I am in zone 5b so nothing can go in the ground.  :(
