I have seedling starfruit that I'm looking to graft over with dwarf varieties. I'm especially interested in Dwarf Hawaiian, but would be happy with Hart or Dwarf Maher. Open to suggestions. It's difficult to protect our Kari in the winter, it wants to be large.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to prune mulberry?
« on: February 02, 2024, 12:44:05 PM »
What's the best practice for pruning mulberries while maintaining fruit production? I'd have a few young trees I'd like to prune while they are dormant, but I hate the idea of sacrificing the fruit they would have made when their buds break.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pruning Surinam Cherry

What's the best time of year to prune Surinam Cherry? I'm in Florida with several large potted trees that need to be pruned back for size reasons. I'd like to prune them now, but I don't want to hurt their spring fruit production.

Does anyone have the 'Dwarf Hawaiian' starfruit variety that they'd be willing to part with some scions? I have a Kari, but I need to keep it a lot smaller than it wants to be.

I live in Florida and I was thinking about buying a Sugar Belle mandarin because they supposedly have displayed some resistance to citrus greening disease. But, the Sugar Belles I've seen for sale are grafted onto Trifoliate or Sour Orange rootstook. Wouldn't greening travel to the rootstock and from there bottleneck the rest of the tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating dried guava seed

I purchased a few dried guava seed and successfully germinated them in some damp vermiculate (they put out a small root), but now they all have a hard-as-rock helmet head on the seedling. Is this fixable, or is this normal?

Hi, I have a bunch of seed grown surinam cherries that I'd like to graft over. I already have a low-resin Lolita which is very good, but that's an old variety and I'm hoping to find newer improved selections. Named varieties that I'd be interested in are Chamba, Majerczak, Vermillion, or Regina.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Luma apiculata dieback
« on: June 27, 2022, 09:55:27 PM »
I'm in Central Florida and this is my first year with a Luma / Chilean Myrtle Berry. It's grown well until recently when the leaves started curling and dying and having pretty severe die-back at the tips. It's potted in a well drained frequently watered mix. The roots look good. Is it the heat? I recently moved it to where it only gets morning sun and is shaded the rest of the day, but it's continuing to die back.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bagging Guava in Florida
« on: May 17, 2022, 10:06:22 PM »
Last year my pink guava fruited for the first time, and by the time the fruit matured it was all riddled with maggots. I assume the maggots were Caribbean fruit fly larvae. Can anyone speak to protecting young fruit with organza bags? I've seen mixed opinions on if this works or not, and mixed opinions about exactly how soon the fruit needs to be bagged.
