Cold Hardy Citrus / These survived -10 F
« on: July 24, 2023, 03:32:40 PM »
Last winter, we had a day when it got down to -10 F and these two in ground trees survived without any damage and with no protection.
The pic below is a 5 ft tall flying dragon:

I took a sucker of a trifoliate rootstock (do not know what it is) and rooted it years ago. It is now at least 6 ft tall and this what it looks like now:

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Wanted: kumquat and mandarin cuttings

Citrus General Discussion / Root rot cure
« on: February 07, 2023, 10:50:43 PM »
I have had problems with root rot and have never been able to successfully deal with it. I have tried removing the old soil mix with fresh mix and/or soaking roots with dilute hydrogen peroxide but that did not work.
Have any of you had success treating root rot?
(I am not looking for how to prevent root rot. I want to know how to cure it.)
N.B.: I am careful not to over water. I have had root rot in gritty mix (equal parts fir bark, Turface MVP, Gran-I-Grit) and 5:1:1 mix of pine bark fines, Perlite peat moss).

Citrus General Discussion / Is dwarfing rootstock necessary?

I am planning on getting some citrus cuttings and propagating them. I need to decide whether I should root them or graft them. They will be grown in containers. So, should I root or graft?

Citrus General Discussion / Grafting onto fast flowering Poncirus

Would a seedling grafted to a fast flowering Poncirus seedling produce fruit sooner than on its own roots?

Citrus General Discussion / Grafting seedling onto seedling
« on: January 14, 2022, 11:36:42 PM »
I would like to graft a mandarin seedling onto a sour orange seedling. Should I remove leaves from the scion, the rootstock or both? Or leave the leaves on the scion but remove leaves from rootstock?

Citrus General Discussion / Graft in winter?
« on: November 20, 2021, 11:47:55 PM »
I just brought my trees indoors for the winter. I am considering grafting some of them. Can I graft now or should I wait until spring?

I know that in ground citrus needs fertilizing 3 times/year, but what about my container citrus here in Massachusetts Zone 5b?
What fertilizer and how much should I use? I have been using Jack's 25-5-15 Professional Fertilizer (1/2 Tsp/gal H2O) every time I water.

Citrus General Discussion / Should we be bare rooting trees?
« on: October 16, 2021, 10:45:37 PM »
I just read this post:
I grow my citrus and fig trees in pots and bare root the trees after I get them from a vendor and before putting them into 5:1:1 mix or gritty mix. I do this because the mix that the trees come in is usually different than the mix I put them in. The mixes that I use are fast draining while some of the mixes that the trees come in are not (they contain a lot of peat). I found that repotting the trees with this kind of mix is problematic because the water drains around the peat based mix in the root ball and does not penetrate into the roots.
I have bare rooting my trees for years without problems.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I prune it?
« on: October 01, 2021, 09:26:57 PM »
I just got a beautiful lemon aid tree from Madison Citrus nursery. It is about 3 ft tall with no branches. I want it to form branches. Should I just let it grow and see what happens or should I remove the apical portion to encourage branching?

Citrus General Discussion / Can I graft now?
« on: September 27, 2021, 10:36:56 PM »
I am thinking of ordering budwood from CCPP  to graft onto some of my trees. My trees will be overwintered indoors at about 65F with artificial light in mid October. Can i do it now or should I wait until until spring?

Citrus General Discussion / Strange new branches
« on: August 22, 2021, 10:16:23 PM »
I have a trifoliate that I rooted from a cuttings of an unknown roostock. It recently put out two branches with very long thorns. Other branches have small thorns. What is going on?

Two years ago, on a whim, I ordered a Shirokolistvennyi cutting from CCPP. Me, being Russian, thought it would be neat if I got a Russian citrus tree.
I grafted it but it failed. I rooted the rest of it. Last summer, it put out a relatively huge branch off to one side, so I cut it off. I could not just throw the cutting out, so I cut it in two and stuck them into Optisorb in a plastic cup. I taped anther plastic cup on top to maintain humidity. One of the two cuttings is now putting out new leaves.
So now I have two Shirokolistvennyi trees, with another possibly coming soon. But I have no idea what this variety tastes like!
So, has any of you tasted it and if so, how did it taste?

Citrus General Discussion / Remove flower buds from scion?

Citrus General Discussion / "Perfect" citrus fertilizer.
« on: June 18, 2019, 04:15:00 PM »
I have read on many websites that the best fertilizer to use for citrus is one with a ratio as close as possible to 5:1:3.
Where did this idea come from?
Are there any peer reviewed scientific papers to back this up?
Is it based on the NPK ratios in citrus tissues?
Has anyone actually shown that citrus take up these nutrients in a ratio of 5:1:3?
