Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee rooting
« on: April 01, 2024, 08:56:51 PM »
Hi guys. Last year Max ( fruit4me) sent me some lychee scions in June and later in September. They were very thin, but I had no rootstocs to graft on, so was going to root them, treated them with fungicide, rooting hormone, put each scion in plastic glass with vermiculite, put the glasses, in turn, in a big pots and cover them with plastic film. Most of them pushed out new leaves, each 2 weeks I just opened the pots for aeration for a few minutes and add a little bit water. In a couple of months some of the scions died, but mostly survived. Unfortunately, neighbors dog came inside the greenhouse once and damage a lot of seedlings and trees, also knocked over the pots, only a couple of glasses survived. One of them still didn't push out the leaves, but when I scratch the skin, there's green under, so I suppose it's still alive. In November there became very cold outside and I decided to take them inside. The leaves on one that pushed out the leaves, remains green and healthy, I was sure that it rooted and was going to put it to pot, but when took it out of the glass I didn't even see any traces of the roots. Anyway I put it in pot, close in plastic bag and bring inside. After a few months it started to push the new leaves, in Sunday I was in orchard and unwrap it, but after several hours the leaves started to wrinkle, so I closed the bag again. So, what do you think, guys? Could roots have appeared? Any idea?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White sapote seed doesn’t sprout
« on: September 14, 2020, 07:23:04 AM »
In April I’ve ordered ten white sapote seeds on  Ebay from USA. Because of pandemic they came only after month and partially rotted. Just for experiment I wrapped they in wet paper and put in plastic bag. Then changed the paper every second day. When they appeared completely rotted threw them out. Eventually when only two left I noticed small outgrowth in the middle of one, carefully cleaned the rotted soft part( about half of seed) and put again in bag. After one week it sprouted small root. When it reached 2 inches I put it in  pot with soil mixture. Now 3 months left but there’s no changes above the surface. The seed is greenish and I can see the origin of the roots, white and quiet thick, so it’s obviously isn’t dead. You can see on picture second seed, which I cleaned too, it made root a week later, was also put in pot and now about 15  inches tall. Did someone see something like that ? What do you think, will it eventually sprout or there’s no chances and I loose my time?

In spring I’ve bought some seeds on Ebay, labeled as « eucalyptus deglupta ». Month later after sprouting I understood that it’s something obviously not eucalyptus but decided for interest continue to grow it. Seller didn’t respond to request to explain this. Could someone help me?

3 weeks after sprouting
