Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lara Farms tree source
« on: March 12, 2022, 05:00:47 PM »
Is the Lara farms everyone discusses her the one that's 3 miles north of the fruit and spice park?  Stopped by today and besides some beautiful established trees all I saw was a smattering of mango trees all like 20gal.

20 years is a long time to wait. I got mine from exotica maybe 6yrs ago?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yellow strawberry guava: sun vs shade
« on: December 19, 2021, 04:45:11 PM »
I leave mine in full sun and it produces great crops. This year I didn't thin at all and they were just as big as last year when I heavily thinned. Nice little garden snack. It was kind of lanky growing in a more shaded area so I rotated it to full sun.

The ones I have in full sun are nice little snacks too. The ones in shade are a flavor explosion and probably the best fruit I have in my yard.

I have 8 trees. 6 in full sun and two in half shade. The ones in full sun fruit months earlier, set more fruit and produce pleasant but unimpressive fruit even when thinned. They were done 3 months ago. The shaded ones weren't ready until the others were completely gone and continue till now. The fruit from the shaded are fewer but excellent, richer, sweeter, everything. Taste like a tropical version of strawberry with a hint of cloves at the end. GIve it a shot.

Shane, is it lemon guava? It seems to be the same as my lemon guava. Your fruits were super big, juicy and sweet, really delicious.

My lemon guava is in partial shade. They are much smaller than yours. The early reopening ones were so so, but the last ones from Dec were pretty good. It seems a good idea to thin the early fruits for lemon guava?

Mine are psidium cattleyanum var. Littoral. I think lemon guava is something different. I've brought mine to brads tastings several times.

I did my graft as cbss describes, i.e. rootstock cut and split and scion inserted. No more cutting after that just some cautious unwrapping.

Not quite sure what you mean but it's just a straight cut across the top.

Grafted gold nugget on an in ground seedling early may (donor tree from scottsurf). Offset cleft graft. Scion wrapped in parafilm. Joint wrapped with rubber band. All protected with foil for couple months. Put on two feet of growth plus three longish side branches. Similar graft on a potted seedling failed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruiting Baobab trees in pots?
« on: November 17, 2021, 04:48:11 PM »
What species precisely? These are all robust and large trees, Malvaceae.
They will root into the ground, a pot bound tree will not be as productive as one in the ground. That’s for certain.

I know they won't be as productive but I live in zone 9a in the USA and they would never survive in ground

I don't know about pots. I'd guess it'd be OK. I have a digitata that's been in the ground 6 years I think. Grown about 3 inches in that time.

There's cooking star fruits and eating star fruits. I think grocery stores mostly carry the former. A ripe star fruit is a lovely fruit.

Avocado is famously impossible to root. Google "etiolation".

Not fritillary. They don't swarm.

Tossed them in the dirt yesterday thinking i had a good picture. Can't find any others. Thinking it might be common buckwheat, but probably some other well known pest.

Will keep looking.
