Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee erinose mite question
« on: January 14, 2022, 05:10:28 PM »
Why does this mite only effect lychee? I’m suprised longan and other plants aren’t effected 🤷‍♂️

Think it’s important to understand the pests preference for lychee to understand how to possibly treat it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit from my yard.
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:38:23 PM »
Here’s a seedling papaya of waimanolo x-77. I have two of these trees growing now and I think it’s interesting to note that my fruits are more melon shaped than the x-77 solo “pear” shape images I’ve seen online. Also my trees aren’t dwarf like x-77 is said to be. I’ve nicknamed it “tree cantaloupe” because the flesh is firmer than average papaya, like a cantaloupe , and the flavor is like a mild mango meets passion fruit sans tartness. I was also growing the sunrise solo papaya but I’ve since culled them because I prefer the x-77 seedlings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nice Read on the Johnny Appleseed of Jackfruit
« on: November 03, 2021, 11:14:01 AM »
By Hey Forum,

Came across this article and thought it was pretty interesting https://modernfarmer.com/2021/11/jackfruit-diversity-jackfruit-jayan-india/

Also there is a statement in the article that grafted jackfruits don’t live as long as seedlings, has anyone else seen this to be true?

Thanks,

Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with plant id
« on: October 30, 2021, 12:32:24 PM »
Hey guys,

Silly question but a while back I planted out some tamarind seeds, and Royal poinciana seeds and lost track of the pots in this section of my yard for a bit. So wondering if this is a tamarind, weed, or Royal poincianna?

Thanks,

-Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does Microcitrus Papuana have seeds?
« on: October 14, 2021, 09:52:04 AM »
Maybe a dumb question, but are there seeds inside the microcitrus papuana fruits? From the pics and videos I have seen of this citrus I don’t see any visible seeds 🤷‍♂️. I would be interesting in growing it from a seed if there are any available.

Thanks,

Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First guava
« on: September 16, 2021, 08:57:24 AM »
Bought this guava tree as “ruby x supreme” from the tree sale at south FL fairgrounds earlier this year. Decided to add guava to mix up the diversity and get some fruit outside of mango and lychee season. I didn’t bag the fruit so happy to see no worms, but it seems small compared to the pics I’ve seen of “ruby x supreme” will the fruit eventually get larger? I liked the flavor and was mildl sweet strawberry flavor.

Thanks,

Joe

Hey Forum,

Just wanted to share some recent airlayers I did with Mamey Sapote, Guava, and two Macadamia Nuts. This was my first time attempting these trees, I have successfully done figs in the past. Not too long ago I was browsing YouTube and came across a professional mamey farmer in Mexico that was propagating mamey by airlayers and so I got inspired to attempt this method myself. I have failed many times trying to graft sapodilla and jackfruit other latex sap fruits which I suspect has to do with the latex sap? 🤷‍♂️ Anyways, I’m assuming this method will also work with green sapote (pouteria viridis)…..so maybe just maybe all you people that bought the white fleshed pouteria viridis seeds from Raul can use this method to get this going here in the US 🤞🤞 😎

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tough as nails pond apple.
« on: June 02, 2021, 09:50:19 AM »

Exploring the great outdoors today I came across this pond apple loaded with fruit and 10ft from the water in intracoastal. This is surprising to me because this is where mangroves are growing and it’s closer to inlet than say a brackish canal.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Fernandez Reticulata
« on: March 17, 2021, 09:07:42 PM »

I purchased this tree a few years ago from Lara farms and today I was able to try the Fernandez reticulata for the first time. For some reason I throw all sorts of pollen at this between it’s own, atemoya, and sugar apple and yet nothing sticks and just by chance it set one fruit for the first time this year which I think it was self pollinatied 🙈😂. I’m mostly happy to see this had red flesh (and not mislabeled) because I’ve been using the pollen the past few years to cross with other annonas. From the pictures I’ve seen of named reticulatas it is the Fernandez with reddish flesh, and why I chose to use in my crossing to try and achieve a hybrid with red flesh. The flavor was not for me though and I hope if you are into reticulatas you can enjoy the pics at least 👍

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Polyphenol Tea
« on: November 21, 2020, 04:01:54 PM »
Hey Forum,

Many people grow tropical fruits for a variety of reasons and I think a common theme includes the need for nutritious food to support health and wellness. I realize that this is not directly tropical fruit related, but I still feel it’s worth sharing. Recently I found this article that ranks sources of polyphenols based on content, the table in this article is very helpful https://www.nature.com/articles/ejcn2010221.pdf?origin=ppub What I find interesting is that the highest polyphenol rich sources are not fruits but herbs and spices! This was contrary to my thought of blueberries, blackberries red wine ect. Here is a recipe I put together based on the article that combines some polyphenol rich sources to make an herbal tea:

1 gallon water
3 star anise “stars”
2.5 oz cloves
1 cinnamon stick
Some fresh mint

Bring to a light boil for 15 minutes and done.

Came across this article which is paywalled.... http://www.actahort.org/books/665/665_12.htm  But mentions mostly seedling lychees in Australian breeding program flowering after three years?!?!

Find this totally wild because from what I have heard is that it takes 15-20 years for a Lychee seedling to flower 🤷‍♂️

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potentially Huge News for Citrus
« on: July 10, 2020, 06:53:29 AM »
Here’s an article.....absent of any data, study design ect but purports to have found a cure for citrus greening and the rationale seems to make sense by isolating resistant genes of finger limes. I really hope this pans out and we can bring back citrus again. https://news.ucr.edu/articles/2020/07/07/uc-riverside-discovers-first-effective-treatment-citrus-destroying-disease

« on: April 18, 2020, 09:23:15 AM »

Haven’t seen any bees one these flowers just black ants 24/7 night and day, think they might be the main pollinators? Nonetheless impressed with quality of camera on iPhone 7+ still going strong 😂

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Making peace with the rabbits
« on: February 25, 2020, 09:05:51 AM »
I have had many young seedlings killed this year by rabbits that eat them in half, essentially cutting the young plant up to a pencil diameter in half, then usually the plant will die while a small very tiny amount come back via new shoots. There seems to be no discrimination as mango, jackfruit, salak, kwaimuk, annonas, white sapote, achacha, papaya have all fallen victim. I realize that this maybe is an eccentric fix but it seems to be working so far. Basically measured out 33in of chicken wire and zip tied to a 12in angled pvc pipe to keep the rabbits away from the seedlings until they are thick enough to not temp the rabbits. This or get a pet falcon I guess 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruiting Barbados Cherry from seed.
« on: February 22, 2020, 09:28:38 PM »
Hey Forum,

Have had Barbados cherry before and was unimpressed with the fruit, until today where the fruit I ate was delicious and sweet. I’m going to plant the few seeds I kept, but wondering how long it takes to fruit from seed? Have read many sources that say to propagate from cuttings as germination rates are low. Any experience with this is appreciated thanks.
