So I’ve seen posts like these on instagram… any idea why they bag the mangos? They look like paper bags and I’m wondering if it helps with tree ripening maybe🤔🤷‍♂️

Thanks,
Joe

Wow Nate and daintree I think you guys nailed this one, because now that I think of it my buddy also said it’s related to the corpse flower… need to read up further on this and if it’s even edible, definitely the most unusual plant I own now lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID this plant, a tropical edible tuber?
« on: September 25, 2022, 05:45:13 PM »
Hey Forum,

I was visiting a friend recently and remarked on the leaves of a plant I’d never seen before and he gave me an off shoot of what he described as “I don’t know what the hell it’s called but it produces a giant edible potatoe and here grow one too.”

Can anyone ID this?

Thanks,
Joe

Good luck, hopefully you get a winner.

Interesting how when pollinated by Lisa, the El Bumpos look absolutely nothing like the ones in San Diego.

That said, the flavor and texture descriptions are much how I would describe it, it varies year to year, but that's a normal flavor profile for the B.

Hey Oolie,

I suspect two things are possible 1) tree may be mislabeled as I believe I bought it from either an Etsy or Amazon seller. I have failed too many times try to graft cherimoya scions and so I jumped at the chance to buy grafted ones to incorporate into breeding. I also bought a supposed grafted “honey heart” but that tree died on me. or 2) the fruits didn’t fill out to their final form because it’s cherimoya in FL and struggling. 🤔

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya in FL anecdote
« on: September 24, 2022, 07:52:26 AM »
Earlier this year I pollinated my el bumpo with Lisa atemoya pollen and got two flowers to set. Last week the fruit fell off prematurely. Pictured is two small el bumpos left and center next to a small geffner. Both el bumpos softened up and the larger one was edible and nice tasting, no grit with a almost bubble gum flavor. The seeds look viable and I’m excited to plant these out and see what comes of these hybrid cherimoya x atemoya seeds.

Hey Ryan,

Nice meeting you and was impressed by your knowledge of tropical fruit trees, keep up the good work in TN. Was wondering what your thoughts were on the super julie and if it ripened up ok?

What was the plant?

I’m just curious, as I hear some are weaker shippers than others.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best mangos of this season
« on: July 20, 2022, 11:25:45 PM »
Tonight's unique special mango is a Blackie seedling that came from Jamaica 8 years ago.
It was recently given the name Black Julie. Reaction of my wife. Oh my gosh! This is the bomb! It is slightly tart but gets sweeter and sweeter the closer you get to the seed and completely fiberless. She looked me straight in the eyes and said get the budwood. That has never happened before. She said it is in same League as Julie but uniquely different

This is now on my bucket list… love the flavor of super Julie and ice cream, blackie sounds like something I’d really enjoy.

This year I didn’t eat much mangos, my trees didn’t produce well and I didn’t go out of my way to source anything. Peach cobbler from skahn (sayyid) was lit, really enjoyed it. Loved the ice creams I got from my tree this year.

The most interesting mango experience though was a tasting with nick “urbanmangos” on instagram where I brought a lemon zest from my mothers tree which is 30 ft tall, unmanaged with pruning and no fertilization or care and we ate it side by side with one that he grew. It was night and day difference, he takes great care of his trees. My mothers was less sweet and flesh more juicy where his was larger, sweeter and flesh was more creamy/firmer texture and absolutely delicious the real potential of lemon zest. I really should be helping out with my moms tree and that’s on me but you know schedules and kids ects… My take home from that experience was you can eat the same cultivar grown by two different people and one can be bland just based off how it was grown, seems obvious, but the impact was so noticeable it was like two different mangos, totally wild.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are abius heavy feeders?
« on: July 20, 2022, 10:51:33 PM »
I have a few seedling trees and the past two years we had a light and brief frost but the cold weather didn’t kill my abiu, I have noticed they will get chlorotic and they start weakening, I give them foliar iron and blue bag of hollytone (has sulfur) and they green up again. Have noticed they are way more actively growing during warmer months. It’s possible if they are malnourished they will have a tougher time handling cold weather. I have a thick mulch layer of pine bark chunks on them and keep them well watered.

Hey Elriba,

Interesting point you bring up, but aside from that I’m really rooting for you that your fruit holds to maturity. I’m super curious if the “big eyes” come true to type from seed and if you can please post a picture of the ripe fruit in time.

Thanks,

Joe

I have orange sherbet, lemon zest, sweet tart, super Julie, ice cream, NDM and live in palm city.

Let me know if interested,

In the article it shows a table of percentages, for example the first line FJ x TS (cherimoya x squamosa and both diploid) 35% of progeny were triploid 🤷‍♂️

I wouldn’t think the temperature has been too hot to stymie painter pollen viability as other pollens are working- geffner x Lisa , geffner x dream , dream x fernandez , geffner x ppc, sugar apple x geffner, sugar apple x Fernandez, el bumpo x lisa,  painter x sugar apple are all crosses holding at the moment, the outlier in all of this is that painter pollen is not sticking. 🤔

Hey Forum,

Wanted to put this out there and see what others may be experiencing, but for two seasons now I’ve been trying to cross ‘painter’ fka ‘cherilata’ with other annonas in my collection and I’ve come up completely empty handed when it’s used as pollen parent. I’ve tried painter x sugar apple, painter x geffner, painter x el bumpo, painter x dream and nothing sticks when used as pollen. I’ve found painter is receptive to sugar apple pollen and I’ve gotten a few fruits to set as female parent. Has any one else tried these crosses and achieved fruit set as pollen parent?

This is an observation, but it sent me down a rabbit hole and I came across this article : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6378316/#!po=0.925926

Evidently, sometimes Annona hybrids can be naturally occurring Triploid or Tetraploid variants which can have an effect on their ability to reproduce. In this paper it is mentioned that:

So I’m curious if it’s possible that ‘Painter’ may be a triploid hybrid which would explain why none of the pollen is working 🤷‍♂️ I guess to confirm this would require a flow cytometer to karyotype a leaf sample 🤔.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is a black sapote tree worth having?
« on: June 20, 2022, 08:25:20 PM »
It’s definitely a personal preference thing. No one else in my family likes it but me. And here is how I enjoy it: smear it on raisin toast like jelly with some butter…. Dude……. Drool. Hahaha I have 10 seedlings going on 2.5 years going to try and fruit them.

Would recommend you try the fruit first, and in order for it to be good you gotta eat it really ripe 👍

Btw this tree is surprisingly high in vitamin C as well as Barbados cherry, would recommend growing either of those as personal health supplements.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seedling Mango tree thread
« on: May 31, 2022, 04:20:37 PM »
Simon this article is gold man…. Going to pay more attention to the floral and vegetative stimulators, and be careful of pruning within 4-5 months of floral stimulus (cold weather). I think why in cali it’s optimal for mangos to flower sooner is it’s dry and cold air so ratio of floral vs vegetative balance is tipped towards flowering ie cold is positive for floral induction while dry is negative for vegetative = strong bloom. The issue in Florida seems to be opposite so if poor cold fronts and rain the scale is tipped to favor vegetative growth and not ideal.

After reading this article my plan going forward is to tip prune 4-5 months before cold fronts traditionally come while withholding nitrogen and keeping track of flushing with goal of one flush post tip prune, then as cold fronts come add a lil nitrogen. I will add gypsum over the summertime. Will have to see how this works out.

What I also found crazy interesting is this paragraph:

Certain mangos require lower temperature threshold for flower induction and it’s evidently graft transmittable so an interesting experiment would be to use those types as rootstock or inter-stock and see if that imparts a better bloom in cultivars that struggle to bloom in warmer weather. I have never observed an actual turpentine mango tree and don’t know if it’s a strong bloomer or not in warm weather but I think I heard it is most common rootstock used in FL. This could be good or bad if weather starts trending warmer over time.

Was going to suggest maybe there is a local botanical garden with a greenhouse you could donate to?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Reviews

Good Morning forum friends,

Celebrated 9 years of marriage down in Miami this weekend and my wife and I hit up mangomen yesterday for some emerald, julie, zebda, and this one Carrie mango as well as the fruit and spice park afterward then finished the evening with dinner at KYU (amazing) must try the cauliflower appetizer.

This tasting came with a view!

Had to butcher this with a dull knife and shed some mango blood 😂 you can tell this Carrie was on the riper side and juicy as it was very yellow with an aromatic smell.

Delicious mango and my first Carrie of the season.

Hey Forum,

I’m looking for seeds or bud wood of annona acutiflora. I know this is a rare one but willing to trade for other rare annonas or purchase seeds or budwood. Sulcata grove had one at one point but theirs unfortunately died recently. I did purchase seeds from them of this previously but mine did not germinate and it was before I got better at germinating annonas.

Any leads on this is appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe
