Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these flowers buds on my Mamey?
« on: August 26, 2012, 05:13:35 PM »
Just bought this Pace from Jeff a few weeks ago. I guess there is probably no shot that it will hold any fruit when it was this small but I am still happy to see flowers. Now I just have to try not to kill it this winter.

A few months back I asked Murahilin how he forced his pineapples. He mentioned adding calcium carbide to water and dumping the water in the center of the pineapple. Looks like it worked. I did it on 7 plants all together and all 7 are developing. They are 4 sugarloaf and 3 store bought tops that I planted.

Here's a few of them.

Been looking for this for a little while. I was hoping to be able to get a few on my trip to Puerto Rico but that is not looking likely now.

I am thinking about putting together an order for some grafted trees from Frankies. I wanted to get your opinion on which of the following types of avocados you thought were best. Fujikawa,Gladys, Hulumanu,Malama, Morita, Nishikawa, Nogami,  SanMiguel, Seedless, Semil 34, Yamagata, Yani. I am probably going to get two types. Kind of already set on the Malama unless you think there are better options.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing Marang?
« on: June 07, 2012, 01:15:25 PM »
Thinking of picking one up. I bought a small seedling years ago but it came in looking horrible. It never grew at all and eventually died. How much more senstive to cold are they compared to Jacks?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone tried airlayering an Avocado?
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:33:46 PM »
I have an avocado tree that I recently grafted with 3 scions from the same cultivar. I did three on one large rootstock because I figured that even I couldn't screw up 3 grafts and at least one would take. It's looking like all three are going to take so I was wondering if an airlayer would be worth doing to get a second plant with the top graft. How long do roots usually take to form?

I will be down in South FL in the Davie area on August 5th so these can be delivered down there then. Sorry can't ship any of these.

Alphonso Mango $25

Nam Doc Mai $25

Lancetilla (Pugged it a few weeks ago but it has a nice thick trunk) $20

Redlands White Sapote $25

Ice Cream Banana $15

I also have a large Grumincama cherry available. I have neglected it for the last few years so it needs a little TLC but should do well if you actually water it. Only $10 for it.

« on: May 22, 2012, 08:53:28 PM »
Needing my lychee fix for the season and am not having any luck locally. Every asian store I ask says they wont be available untill the end of June which is obviously wrong based on what I am reading here. Pm me prices if you can help. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Finally a female flower (I think)
« on: April 24, 2012, 01:52:57 PM »
This is my Bangkok lemon. It put out male flowers last season but I am pretty sure this one is a female. Unfortunately it doesn't look like I will have any male flowers to pollinate it. Hopefully it will send out some more flowers over the next few months. I really want this thing to fruit this season because I may be moving from this house in the next year or so.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about Avocado root stock
« on: April 13, 2012, 05:01:40 PM »
I want to try to graft a few avocados in the next few months. I bought a few imported mexican avocado's. I think they are mexican hass. Would these be ok for a rootstock or should I look around for some Lula seedlings to use as a rootstock?

Pine island has some that they say are from cuttings so I was thinking about grabbing one of each.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pretty happy to see this
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:15:02 PM »
My little Lalee Jewo that Jeff was kind enough to sell me after I managed to murder my first one. Too small to fruit but I am happy to see that it at least flowers. The tree itself is only about 2ft tall. I have to admit that it will be tough to cut off the fruit if it actually sets any.
Anyone know how large the fruit is on these?

Oscar, any opinions of this fruit? I am assuming that you are the only person here who has probably tasted it.
