You are at the top of the list, Starling. With the sweetness of the Megalanthus and the musky awesome flavour of some of my reds, something good must eventuate. Time will tell hopefully.

277
Just out of curiosity, what sort of hybrid/cross are you looking for. And if anyone has a special hybrid available, can I have one to. But seriously, if all goes well with flowering, I am hoping to do a number of Megalanthus crosses this year with some of my best red flesh varieties. In a few years I will hopefully have something to offer under this topic.

I have not had a problem with raccoons and squirrels, but for rats and mice in plague proportions in western Queensland, Australia, we find that a cement and icing sugar 50/50 mix does the trick. They eat it, walk through it and lick it off their fur. Works a treat.

Hi Starling1, what do you mean by orange and red megalanthus? Two different varieties or just the Frankies Red.

Hi Simon, just out of curiosity, are your Frankies Red self pollinated or crossed.

Here's a picture of a Frankie's Red flower when it's starting to open.

Hi Simon. Looking forward to seeing the results of your flowering Frankies Red. I received a cutting from you last year and it is now 7 feet tall. It has grown really well through our winter and I am hoping it will flower this year or early next year. Keep us posted. Thanks again.

You're welcome Ranman, I'm glad the cutting is doing well for you. I have no other dragonfruit varieties with open flowers right now so Frankie's Red will have to be self pollinating if I am to get fruit. If none of these flowers set fruit, I will have to assume that they require cross pollination. I've never tasted a Red x Yellow dragonfruit so I am very eager to try this Frankie's Red. I may even try to cross this Frankies Red with a Halleys Comet in the hopes of getting larger fruit but removing the male anthers, bagging individual flowers and growing out countless seedlings seems like a lot of work:(

Hi Simon, the growth of the Frankies Red has been impressive and I am looking forward to hopefully getting a few flowers in the coming summer. Like you, I am hoping to cross some of my other varieties with the Frankies in the hope of getting something special. I will hopefully have over 40 different varieties flower this year and I am hoping to cross as many as I can, and after a few emails with a grower in Israel, a cross with the yellow megalanthus and the Frankies Red would be brilliant.  Hopefully good things to come. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing pics of your Frankies fruit.

My first lot of blue goji arrived today:

Hi Dann.  Recently received a pack of Black Goji and I am looking forward to seeing how they go in the Queensland climate. Germination was extremely quick and so far, even with transplanting at the cotyledon stage(3 days after germination) there has been no loss. Plants were germinated in full Sun(winter here at the moment) and look great. Biggest fear is that this will become a weed due to its rapid germination and high strike rate(100%) if birds are allowed to eat it.

Hi. Maybe a bit off the current topic but I'm chasing a bit of information on a couple of Dragonfruit varieties that I have acquired.  One is labeled 3S and the other is labeled G2.  I think I have read somewhere that 3S is "Delight" but don't quote me on that. Thanks in advance for any info.

I grow all of my Dragonfruit in black plastic pots and after earlier problems with the occasional cutting developing rot I changed my tactics. I leave my cuttings high and dry(nowhere near soil) until I see the small root buds start to appear which on some cuttings is 5 months and still waiting. Once the roots start to show, I fill the pot to where I want it, put in a stake and tie the cutting it. The cutting sits on the top of the soil with no green plant below the soil line. Haven't lost 1 yet.

Another way to sort this problem out is to leave the plant exactly where it is on it's post, cut it off above any rot, refill pot with good quality potting mix to just below the cut, and let nature do its thing. It will eventually throw out new roots which will head straight down into the potting mix and all is good. I realised this option when my dog to a liking to fresh dragonfruit stems and ate about 12 inches of stem from one of my 1 year old plants. I did nothing, and the ariel roots kept it going until the chewed off base threw out 3 roots. They grew all the way back to the soil(in the air, not touching the post) and the plant is growing strong. Hope this helps.

A Nicaraguan Red variety will do the same thing. I can't grow it here because of the frost but I'm sure it will pollinate everything you have.

288
Best thing to do would be to get a self pollinating Vietnamese White dragon fruit. I use this to pollinate everything that I'm not crossing and this variety will set fruit on everything I've used it on, even a plant that had never set fruit in 20 years, set over 30kg fruit in 1 season with cross pollination.  The Viet white is currently the best pollinator I know of and it doesn't let me down. Good luck.

Black Goji seeds germinated. Soaked in water for 3 days and did nothing else, I got 2 that are showing white root. Another one looks like it may germinate soon as well. So 2/10 not bad for some dried black goji fruit.
Hi Nullzero,  just received my goji in the post and was wondering if you had any wisdom on the planting. After looking at the fruit(purchased 100 seeds/10 fruit), it seems the seeds are very difficult to remove from the dried fruit. Should I just plant the whole fruit or take the time to extract the seeds??

Hey Starling1. Micro sprayers work well if the air is still and there is not a mass of mulch to soak up the moisture before it reaches the root zone. I have grown plenty of citrus, lychees, loquats, figs etc as well as heaps of dragonfruit and have always had preference for adjustable drillers. I set them up a few inches above the ground to keep them out of the dirt and it's easy then to check the flow when you walk past. Easy to adjust the flow or clean out if necessary. Fruit trees never missed a beat.

Nice pics.  I have noticed similar growth at the moment in Queensland. It is the last week in Autumn and after a cold snap 3 weeks ago things have taken off. I have had 3 plants throw out flower buds(no fert or anything that would induce flowering) and all have turned into normal be branch growth. Maybe it is a heat thing as it has been very warm for Autumn. Having said that, my plants are growing like crazy with temps in the high 20's so hopefully a warm winter will help to produce a lot of summer fruit.

Hi Sven. If you could check with Leo that would be great as it will be difficult for me to pick up from Simon due to me living in Australia. I would only need the cutting posted to San Clemente California. Will talk to my friend to see if he is down San Diego way at all. Thanks for your help, Anthony.
