Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2022 Yangmei (Myrica Rubra) Group Order
« on: January 23, 2022, 12:41:48 AM »
I saw a lot of people covered with clear plastic for humidity in the first buy.  How do you maintain high humidity without a plastic?  Is the white tulle fabric to maintaine humidity also?

Bill,
Thank you again for all your efforts and sharing this opportunity to grow these trees.  It was nice meeting you and seeing your beautiful backyard full of fruit trees.

Bill’s friend who has lots of experience growing Yangmei was at his house when I picked up my trees and shared some additional advice.  After pruning any branches she said to cover the cut ends with parafilm.  She doesn’t cover the entire branch just the tips to seal in moisture.  She also said it’s very
important to keep it out of any direct sunlight and high temps.  However, they need bright light.  When grafting, she mentioned one of the challenges is that the scion will lose a lot of moisture as soon as it’s cut.  There is a video on crfg where a grower had success by misting scion with water and diluted seaweed extract before wrapping.  Let’s find out episode #19
https://crfg.org/home/library/crfg-inc-video-gallery/lets-find-out/

I lost most of my trees in the first buy during the first week after potting them because I covered them with plastic for humidity, I read that recommendation on the forum for the buy from a few years ago.  Even with the air holes cut in the plastic the branches got mold really quickly.  I had two survive from the first buy and kept them under the shade of larger trees.  They grew fine but kept getting eaten by caterpillars, which slowed their growth.  This time I bought white tulle fabric to protect from the insects.

The trees I saw at Bill’s looked great.  Good luck everyone!

Janet

the peoples republic of california also granted me permission to burn an acre of brush.  So I did.  This will become a new block of trees.  Will have it planted out by summer.

Joe,

Do you think tomorrow is possible to pick up the trees from you for San Diego folks?

Correct. Same technique I use to root fig
Cuttings and where I got the idea to prevent moisture lost but only above the dirt level.

Hi Joe..from your instruction below..you wrap the wood in wax tape? so the trunk and branches above the root were wrapped/covered in wax tape?
I posted what I did in the previous forum chat, and pretty much what I am going to do again.
I use a 2 gallon fabric pot that will eventually be planted in the ground so I don’t disturb any roots or have to up pot.
The soil mixture is sand, pumice and vermiculite that I pre charge with sea weed extract and nutrients. I do not use peat or coco coir.
I wrap as much wood in wax tape and then put under 90 percent shade cloth in my green house.
Then let nature do it’s thing. I’m hoping that these won’t have to be fumigated quarantined extra days to give us a better chance.

Has anyone try to grow / taste Golden Lady?  I believe only Wong farm near palm desert sells this variety?

62
anybody knows the nursery's name in San Diego that sell m. californica?  The pictures that kaz posted about that nursery were deleted.

63
Simon,

Is this rootstock suitable for growing in container?

Please see attached link if you would like to bid on my Yangmei fruit tree grafted onto California native rootstock (M. Californica).

http://ebay.us/ernSlf?cmpnId=5338273189

Here is some additional information

Up for auction is this “Biqi” variety of Yangmei grafted onto Morella Californica  rootstock.

Yangmei is a delicious and exciting new fruit crop in the US and trees are extremely rare. This is the first ever Yangmei grafted onto Morella Californica up for public auction in the US that I am aware of.

Yangmei is an evergreen tree with a densely rounded canopy that produces small fruit that varies in color from white, green, red, pink and black.

Fruit from the “Biqi” variety are dark in color, almost black. The fruit size is larger than a quarter but smaller than a half dollar and this variety is highly coveted for its sweet taste and smaller seeds. Biqi has a slightly sweet smell with a tinge of berry and a hint of Osmanthus.

The Biqi fruits I sampled had a Brix of about 13.4% and tasted sweet with a combination of flavors from Blackberries, Pakistani Mulberries, Strawberries and something very unique that was reminiscent of Sandalwood.

Many people have difficulty growing Yangmei on its own rootstock and the Californica rootstock may or may not grow better for them.

This tree is grown outdoors in full sun but it gets placed under some shade on extremely hot days. This tree is in a #3 container and has two grafts that have pushed.  The larger branch is 6.5 inches long and has approximately 25 leaves.  The smaller branch is 2 inches long and has 12 smaller leaves. There is also one additional grafted bud that has healed over but it has not pushed yet so I’m selling this tree as a double graft.

I keep the pH of my soil around 6.3-6.7 and I only water my plants when the soil has dried out about 70% or more. For the best chance of success, this tree should be planted into the ground because the soil moisture will be easier to control.

In most cases, Yangmei will require both a male and female (Dioecious) tree to produce fruit. This tree is only grafted with female scions from the “Biqi” variety.

For a male pollinator, you can plant seeds or purchase seedlings (if available) in the hopes of getting a male.  I plan on selling grafted male trees in 2022 but there are no guarantees.

This tree is for local pick up only in the San Diego, California area. If you need shipping, you will have to make your own arrangements to have someone pick up the tree and ship it to you.

Total tree height with pot is 28 inches. Plant alone is 21 inches.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The Reed avocado thread
« on: October 28, 2021, 02:42:37 PM »
I think what you have is a nabal (reed is an offspring of nabal).  Nabal has alternate bearing habit whereas Reed produced every year.
I didn't realize that Reed was such a popular variety that had merited it's own thread. I guess my post is just eye candy or to create a bit of jealousy, lol just kidding.  I've seen several quite old avocado trees in socal. Here's my tree that several people confirm to be Reed.  It's an old tree and I don't know how old.  I never water it. Every other year it would produce at least 500 - 600 hundred fruits. I tried counting the fruit before but would stop at about 500 before giving up. Someone said it looked closer to a thousand fruit, hahah.

Ken 60acre..that's huuge..may be sell to me a couple acres  ;).

We recently purchased a 60-acre farm in Escondido, CA for my hundreds of fruit trees in pots that are overdue to be put in the ground.  My thought is to build a shade house, put those fruit trees there for 2 months, get the irrigation lines in, prep the soil, get rid of ground squirrels/gophers, and put the trees in the fall or spring.  The exact details on how to do so remain unclear to me...I have no experience running a farm or planting such large numbers of trees.  Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

If anyone is interested in having a visit, please PM, especially if we have already met at Brad's gatherings.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: picking cutting for propagation
« on: July 03, 2021, 11:47:23 AM »
I accidently broke off a branch from my C-35 tree..so I thought why not try to root it?  I wrapped the broke off cutting in buddy tape, put it in soil in a solo cup then cover the cup with a clear plastic bag to create a mini greenhouse.  I left it in shade and 6 weeks later, it rooted.  The cutting was small about 1/8 of an inch.  Wonder if I can try the same thing with a thicker cutting?

What should be the size and age of the branch/cutting for propagation?  Do you pick the cutting when it is still green and soft?

Looking good Brad!! you have enough land to secede from CA  ;D
I love this place but the politicians and public healthy officials are going to drive me out of here. Their authoritarian bullshit is becoming unbearable.  I need to move...

I was wondering about that.  You Cali guys put up with a lot of stupid government induced shit.

They are seriously ramping up their BS by the day it seems.  Its amazing people are on board with some of this crap.

You are right..may be I will bring ice cream.

Beer doesn't go with fruits. At least for me, it would give stomach irritation or upset.

If you want alcohol then I would get someone to bring an non-complicated ice cream such as vanilla, strawberry, pistachio, mint with chocolate chips. Green tea ice cream?
Then pour some Southern Comfort over it. If not SC, then some kind of brandy or cognac. Slivovitz even?
Just my two cents worth :) Have a fun time tasting fruits and testing the brix on the ice cream 8)

I'll bring beer.

knowing what we know now from simon/brad and others, I suggest Kang to organize another group buy.

72
what do you spray with?

Julie, those are probably Japanese beetles..
the only way that i was able to control them was spraying the lawn and stopping the cycle..
the beetles lay eggs in the ground, the eggs become grubs(which eat the roots of the lawn) and then they become beetles and eat your fruit trees leaves.. it never ends

after i started spraying the lawn, the problem seemed to get better

« on: May 17, 2021, 12:31:31 PM »
I thought you've been using gro-power..it doesn't have plastic coating.
ive used a lot of this polymers in the past but at this point Im against it because its basically like putting plastic pieces all over the orchard.  Im not at all an organic nazi but this stuff I just dont want in my land.  some of the plastic products people use are bio accumulators and our bodies are not able to get rid of it.  and it accumulates in the food chain.  I dont want plastics in my environment or food.

As far as their performance as a fertilizer, yeah its awesome they dont wash out and dont burn.  Its just the leftover shells I dont want so I will never use that again.  No offense at all to you pine islander or anyone else using it, its just not for me.

of all the pictures I've seen so far, An Hai and Bi Qui have the most growth.  Anyone seen any growth on Dong Kui or Black Peak beside Simon?
