Thank you again for all your efforts and sharing this opportunity to grow these trees.  It was nice meeting you and seeing your beautiful backyard full of fruit trees.

Bill’s friend who has lots of experience growing Yangmei was at his house when I picked up my trees and shared some additional advice.  After pruning any branches she said to cover the cut ends with parafilm.  She doesn’t cover the entire branch just the tips to seal in moisture.  She also said it’s very
important to keep it out of any direct sunlight and high temps.  However, they need bright light.  When grafting, she mentioned one of the challenges is that the scion will lose a lot of moisture as soon as it’s cut.  There is a video on crfg where a grower had success by misting scion with water and diluted seaweed extract before wrapping.  Let’s find out episode #19

I lost most of my trees in the first buy during the first week after potting them because I covered them with plastic for humidity, I read that recommendation on the forum for the buy from a few years ago.  Even with the air holes cut in the plastic the branches got mold really quickly.  I had two survive from the first buy and kept them under the shade of larger trees.  They grew fine but kept getting eaten by caterpillars, which slowed their growth.  This time I bought white tulle fabric to protect from the insects.

Correct. Same technique I use to root fig
Cuttings and where I got the idea to prevent moisture lost but only above the dirt level.

Here is some additional information

Up for auction is this “Biqi” variety of Yangmei grafted onto Morella Californica  rootstock.

Yangmei is a delicious and exciting new fruit crop in the US and trees are extremely rare. This is the first ever Yangmei grafted onto Morella Californica up for public auction in the US that I am aware of.

Yangmei is an evergreen tree with a densely rounded canopy that produces small fruit that varies in color from white, green, red, pink and black.

Fruit from the “Biqi” variety are dark in color, almost black. The fruit size is larger than a quarter but smaller than a half dollar and this variety is highly coveted for its sweet taste and smaller seeds. Biqi has a slightly sweet smell with a tinge of berry and a hint of Osmanthus.

The Biqi fruits I sampled had a Brix of about 13.4% and tasted sweet with a combination of flavors from Blackberries, Pakistani Mulberries, Strawberries and something very unique that was reminiscent of Sandalwood.

Many people have difficulty growing Yangmei on its own rootstock and the Californica rootstock may or may not grow better for them. 

This tree is grown outdoors in full sun but it gets placed under some shade on extremely hot days. This tree is in a #3 container and has two grafts that have pushed.  The larger branch is 6.5 inches long and has approximately 25 leaves.  The smaller branch is 2 inches long and has 12 smaller leaves. There is also one additional grafted bud that has healed over but it has not pushed yet so I’m selling this tree as a double graft.

I keep the pH of my soil around 6.3-6.7 and I only water my plants when the soil has dried out about 70% or more. For the best chance of success, this tree should be planted into the ground because the soil moisture will be easier to control.

In most cases, Yangmei will require both a male and female (Dioecious) tree to produce fruit. This tree is only grafted with female scions from the “Biqi” variety. 

For a male pollinator, you can plant seeds or purchase seedlings (if available) in the hopes of getting a male.  I plan on selling grafted male trees in 2022 but there are no guarantees.

This tree is for local pick up only in the San Diego, California area. If you need shipping, you will have to make your own arrangements to have someone pick up the tree and ship it to you.

Total tree height with pot is 28 inches. Plant alone is 21 inches.

We recently purchased a 60-acre farm in Escondido, CA for my hundreds of fruit trees in pots that are overdue to be put in the ground.  My thought is to build a shade house, put those fruit trees there for 2 months, get the irrigation lines in, prep the soil, get rid of ground squirrels/gophers, and put the trees in the fall or spring.  The exact details on how to do so remain unclear to me...I have no experience running a farm or planting such large numbers of trees.  Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Beer doesn't go with fruits. At least for me, it would give stomach irritation or upset.

If you want alcohol then I would get someone to bring an non-complicated ice cream such as vanilla, strawberry, pistachio, mint with chocolate chips. Green tea ice cream?
Then pour some Southern Comfort over it. If not SC, then some kind of brandy or cognac. Slivovitz even?
