Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Florida coconut belt
« on: October 25, 2022, 11:28:42 AM »
We planted Coconuts at my Grandmothers house in Indialantic back in the late 90s, they're doing great!!!

That’s where I’m at. We have tons around here, tho obviously not as many as places on the coast further south.  They do fine here tho.

I would agree with Jaboticaba’s assessment, that essentially sums it up.

The birds love these and I get seedlings fairly often.  I have a few trees with some fruit right now I believe, but not certain how to prep and ship the seed or I’d be more than happy to.  If you know how, let me know, I can save and send you some.

If they're shipped in damp vermiculite or paper towel they should make it shipped in a priority envelope, we're pretty geographically close. I'd imagine seedlings without soil would even make it this close (although that might be pushing it with how they handle mail). I was just in Miami yesterday to pick up a tree from a different forum member but didn't see any fruits.

PM sent.

Thank you!
Dan

Just responded to your PM.

Very interesting that vermiculite can have asbestos. Maybe I'll stay with perlite.
Anyway, from my last post, I've tried to get my act together and sprout seeds better.
I now label them and use better soil. Fingers crossed for them eugenias.

Vermiculite shouldn’t have asbestos in it, that was primarily from a specific mine maybe a few decades ago, which has since been closed down, and currently available vermiculite should not have much, if any, asbestos in it.  I guess there was a big consumer awareness and crackdown on it at some point. I haven’t been in the game long enough to remember any of that, but good to hear progress can be made on stuff like that.

This is just what I read a few weeks ago, would have to look into it again to give better details and check the sources and all that good stuff give a bit more confidence on the info.

Check shilohtech or palologrower-

The tree should be dropping fruit in fruit and spice park right now also-

50-100 seeds might be the size of a briefcase or larger, fair warning

Larger than a briefcase I’d think for 100.  Those are some of the largest seeds I’ve dealt with.  Really awesome looking seeds tho.

I had been potting everything out, as I never cared for paper towel method, but running out of space for pots and tired of having to clear out empty pots months later, so I’ve just started trying to germinate everything in ziplocks with vermiculite.  I’m also trying some hydrogen peroxide on the seeds.  Started this as I’ve had some really great success with seeds purchased from members germinating in the baggies of vermiculite sellers have packed and shipped in.

Found and resurrected this thread out of interest for y’all’s opinions.  I’m not sure yet if I’ll continue doing it this way.  I’m also not sure if I’ve been cleaning the seeds well enough, but that’s probably a whole different thread.

I would also recommend Raul.  Got some beautiful germinated Luc’s garcinia seeds from him, came relatively quickly, no issues, awesome seller.

It’s always a risk sending international, but someone sending empty envelopes isn’t something I would want to be dealing with.

Got mine today, looking good, thanks!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Jujube
« on: October 13, 2022, 07:14:00 PM »
Some folks think that the Thai/Indian jujube fruit is the same as the Chinese jujube fruit. Well I’m here to set things straight: They’re not the same fruits!!

IMHO, the Thai/Indian jujube is better suited to eating fresh. Its flesh is crunchy, juicy, with a delicate sweet to sour ratio that is very appealing to my taste bud. On the other hand, fresh Chinese jujube fruit tends to be more spongy, with a small amount of astringency in some fruits. That’s not to say that Chinese jujube is not good, as there are several superior named varieties with the complex flavor of sugar cane and caramelized pears. Anyway, I have both fruits and they each have their own places in the garden!a

100%
Just bought some Chinese jujube from local market and I could barely eat them, sorry to any who like them fresh, but the texture was no good and the taste was hardly better.  The Thai jujube I’ve had have been way better for fresh eating like you said.

I think they commonly dry them out before eating the Chinese jujube.  Maybe that helps them to be palatable.

What variety?

How are these doing?  Anyone interested in selling seeds for a good tasting one?

The tree is so pretty, just saw at Fruit & Spice park here in FL, USA; but fruits weren’t ready yet.

Welcome!
I am in zone 6 and have 64 species of tropical plants in my greenhouse. Sitting out there having coffee right now, in fact. I started out like you, moving things in and out every year but it killed me. Those big pots are heavy! Wound up with golfers elbow and tennis elbow in both arms. Couldn't even lift a pen or a coffee cup for months.

So, thoughts -
1 - Most anything can be grown in pots with the right care. So go wild.
2 - Get a really good pot dolly.
3 - Then give up and build a greenhouse...

May LOOK peaceful, but as I was typing this, one of my little parrots fell into my coffee cup! Oh, the hazards of jungle life!
Any recommendations on a good dolly?

Was just thinking of this the other day and was worried dolly might not move well in the dirt once it has some weight on it, may have to look for something with big wheels.  Idk tho, I haven’t really shopped for em yet, but feel like I need to get one before I have more than a couple 15+gal pots.  Even the 7 gal get to be a pain after moving a few.

When you get settled and want to rebuild, please share what you would want to acquire.  I'd be happy to help find and send stuff to you.

Definitely!  I’d be happy to do the same and help anyone hit hard in that area as well.  The video footage I’ve seen looks absolutely heartbreaking.  I hope everyone in that SW FL area is safe.  There’s going to be a lot of rebuilding going on for quite some time.

So sorry to hear about your trees, Jabba, I hope your home is Ok and you’re able to rebuild your property as quickly as possible.

The road/bridge to the island is gone. Only access is by boat. No way for emergency vehicles to gain access as of today. Absolutely terrible. The few people I know that stayed and had large mango trees said they are no more. 150+ mph winds. Unsure about any forum members

That is the dang saddest thing.  I wish them the best, hopefully the folks out that way are safe and sound and secondly hopefully more trees will survive than expected.  If nothing more, maybe at least it will offer some opportunities to plant anew.

Don't be shy to guess!
If I hit my target score,
I'll give away
all the plants I listed so we will have 5 winners
ON the condition I get my happy score.
If not, I will be disappointed and mad and you will be disappointed and mad as your odds of winning decreased.
So let me get my score ACT please!

Hahaha, best luck bro.

Did you feel like you boosted your score a bit this time or impossible to say?  I never took ACT, only SAT.

I hear ya on brutal summer, I could barely keep up watering like almost every day and everything was still begging for a drink.  Can’t tell you how grateful I am to hear the sound of rain right now as I type this, finally had a fair bit just now.

All I’ve got here is acerola, everbearing mulberries, and Jamaica cherries.  I’m still waiting on fruit from a lot of my trees tho, so hopefully in the next few years.

I’ve seen some pond apples dropping on the trails.  Just tried one the other day, was actually pretty tasty, but all seeds and almost no flesh.  Most years the animals eat them before I get chance to find a nice looking one, but I guess I was hiking at the right time this year.

Oh, I shouldn’t have used the word “forum,” I meant it in the general sense like different places of exchange, i.e.: eBay, etsy, etc.

I imagine people will occasionally pay it even tho it’s a bad price. If you scroll the forum here there are multiple listings and the seeds are $2-3 on most I think, and now Raul offering for $2, lol, so it’s definitely a case of know your market.  This isn’t the spot for a boutique seed shop.

I wouldn't be surprised if you can get $10/seed on other forums though.  If she's doing 2 for $10, then that's not necessarily horrible.

I know not everyone has access, but these have become way more available; Here in FL, if you look around a bit you can buy a 1gal tree at that price or $15, and yes, I've seen that a few times not just isolated instances.  The price of 4 seeds would buy you a decent 3gal tree.

Best luck!

Etsy is expensive because they charge through the nose to sell on their platform. There's no cost to advertise here.

Out of curiosity, what other tropical fruit forums do you visit?

Mine sit inside small pond shells.  Can fit 3 3gal trees per pond shell and I keep them sitting in rain water pretty much the entire year, only allowing them to dry out occasionally.

They seem to like this as far as I can tell.

Red, grimal, esalq, & restinga

Interested in the 4 min, sounds like probably should do 3F 1M.

FL

Thanks!

Mine just arrived today, sent yesterday I believe, super fast, but I am pretty close to USA intermediary here in FL.

Thanks!
