Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fusing rootstocks
« on: May 18, 2021, 10:19:57 AM »
Recently learned from another forum member that you can fuse two rootstocks and graft one scion onto the fused "double rootstock" for increased growth, health and production. I assume this would work great for slow fruiting species and zone pushers.

Does anyone have data on this?

Put me down for 10 sabara, 10 red and a couple mulberry and hog plum cuttings.

That reticulata is about to flower. Hopefully will have a fruit for you soon.

Can stop by later today.

Caught me!

Good to hear youve gotten some germination. How do you germinate the seeds without moisture? Im up for the challenge.

Im assuming the main issue would be dealing with humidity and rainy season.

Put me down for a star apple if you have one left.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / May Harvest

So far this May I've harvested surinam cherry, coconut,  pitangatuba and mangos should be ready by the end of the month here in South Florida.

What's a May harvest look like for you?

It looks like a species from the Caatinga of Brazil (desert). Saw a thread where Luc had a z. Joazeiro growing almost 10 years ago.

Have seeds coming, we'll see!

Interesting - is the "3rd gen" from a different source or 3rd generation in Louisiana?

Are the seeds edible? I was tempted to snack on a few yesterday. They look tasty.

Neighbors tree...  ::)

Greg - have you measured Brix or ascorbic acid levels? Wondering what type of variation you're seeing.

Does girdling decrease lifespan?

Seeds arrived super quick, thanks again!

Anyone have experience growing/fruiting? Can it be hybridized with jujube?

Thanks all. It makes sense that there is only so much energy and the tree having to fruit will surely use energy.

I'm going to run a small test:
1. Plant out loquat seedlings
2. Graft onto side branches of 5 trees after 1 year (if possible)
3. Graft onto side branches of 5 more trees after 2 years
4. Graft onto side branches of 5 more trees after 3 years

I'm interested to see if there is a point where the tree is mature enough that grafting onto it doesn't slow down the main stem fruiting. Will report back in due time.

I will be trying to graft camu camu on vexator soon. I've seen threads with Flying Fox fruits that did it but not sure of the results long term.

Getting a large shipment of seeds today, should have some seedlings to offer soon

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Annonaceae seed viability
« on: May 11, 2021, 08:43:26 AM »
I recently planted sugar apple seeds from Aug/Sep 2020 alongside seeds from early 2021. Last years seeds have all germinated, none of this years have yet.
As for rarer annonas I haven't had much luck. None of the a. Duckei or a. Paludosa seeds I got from Tradewinds germinated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Achacha question
« on: May 10, 2021, 03:20:49 PM »
Achacha is the best Garcinia Ive tasted in FL and 15ft is after a decade of growth. Mangos and avocados grow to 30+ ft.

If I graft onto a side branch leaving the main branch alone, will the fact that I grafted the tree slow down its ability to mature and fruit from the main branch (not grafted)?

My goal is to graft onto side branches and receive named varietal fruit without interrupting the fruiting of the seedling varieties for selection purposes. Can I have my cake and eat it too?

Hey all,
Looking for seeds or seedlings if possible.

Garcinia forbesii
Garcinia atroviridis
Garcinia prainiana
Garcinia livingstonei
Theobroma bicolor

Any other rare seed outlets not listed here?

This is great info. I am in my second year of collecting fruit trees and am now growing most rare zone pushers from seed. Working on solutions for keeping them warm, will be setting up two small greenhouses as well as putting wooden posts around the in-ground trees and wrapping with plastic.

Looks similar to uvaria chamae, but wrong continent.
