Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Old Potted Avocado Tree in Zone 8a
« on: November 07, 2025, 06:30:13 PM »
A old trick that they do in Mexico is to girdle the seedling tree best to do in Fall that will stimulate tree to flower following year. Have not it on loquat tree but not avocado before! You want to cut about 1/8" cut all the way around trunk down to wood that traps energy in top half until trunk heals and grows over the cut and hopefully forces to flower!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Root prune pomegranate before planting?
« on: November 07, 2025, 06:17:57 PM »
Yeah, I second Brads, answer they are bullet proof as are Olive and loquats just to name a few. I learned over 50yrs. ago that Pomegranates, Olives , grab apple and other non fruiting trees are bullet proof when in Bonsai class they would dig up and cut back roots and top and replant in small pot and live! Mind that all done at right time of year!

I get about 80-90% take on fresh passion seeds and I soak overnight in Ga-3 or strong blk tea then plant next day with bottom heat. Best to plant in individual  seed tray. Then when seedling gets second level of leaves I transplant into pint pots then into 1-gal after they fill pint pot with roots. Fresh seed is best older seeds get poor take or none atoll.

I tasted a A. Chiri 'Inca Gold' fruit Kaz, sent me he want by opinion because I have a fruiting seedling of Inca Gold not sure of source but got my tree in 2002 at CRFG conference in Orange County but don't remember what city. Any way I tasted the 'Inca Gold' today and was very rich in butterscotch, caramel, flan type taste profile not as moist as sweet potato but not as dry as other dry type lucumas I grow. You can eat skin too with no disagreeable flavor fruit was maybe richer than my seedling fruit but very good I think best of Ice cream or smoothies. And only one small seed and another small misshapen seed. Very goo flesh to seed ratio highly recommend this variety.

thanks for reply Kaz, yes, I have Marcus Pumpkin going well from scion from you last fall or year before any way growing well need to make another tree on seedling then since you say it's a good one! ;) i have on branch of Yamagata seedling right now but growing sideways.

36
Kaz, that was a big old tree did it just get stumped down ? What is your opinion of fruit taste? Thanks for posting!

« on: September 20, 2025, 11:51:57 AM »
Yeah, your correct Paw Paws hate there roots being disturbed ! Hopefully your tree will make it don't over water while it's trying to come back. Hope it makes it!

Yeah, papaya trees are magnets for spider mites I have used hard water spray to knock off plants but the best thing I've used is a product called 'Circadian Sunrise' by Circadian Crop Science. I bought another product from them called 'All Phase' that knock peach leaf curl out of my peach and nectarine trees good stuff.

Thanks for sharing your experience in Peru, loved all the pics and explanation of fruits and tubers. I grow lucuma and loved that little report on the different varieties or types can you explain the moist textured lucuma month feel to us? I have growing 6- different sourced lucumas and (gold one 'Inca Gold')an have 'Pecan Pie' which is supposed to be a moist type but I have never eaten one so, don't know what texture I should expect!   8)

44
Cool, thanks for reply will have to look for that variety.

45
Was your tree a seedling or grafted? How long before it set fruit ? Sounds like a good fruit I like those tasty small fruiting trees thanks for sharing.

Checking back in on the SB lucuma duo. Both trees are flowering, one is loaded. The other had a big spring crop. It may be that there is an early bearing and late bearing one. They said they’d give me a call in November when they are ripe
Nice looking fruit Kevin, await taste results!

I bought it many years ago at a CRFG conference in Orange County or Pomona or Riverside? I assume that but can't confirm it!

48
The tree you show in pic's looks good and healthy I would graft on upward facing branches towards top of canopy! Alos, agree with brad best time for grafting avocados in Ca. is Dec,-Feb. outside, if you have potted trees can graft almost all year long in green house (Jan.-Sept.). Also I use single edge razor in ex-atco holder for softer younger wood with cottony insides! I cover outside grafts with white paper bags until growth starts then tear bag open a little more each week to expose growing graft to more sun slowly!

49
Small seed lot permit is not that hard to get at least it wasn't 5-yrs ago! And on permit have to list Country!

50
What type of graft were you doing ? Also it's better to select upward growth branches because sometimes smaller side branches will be aborted by mother tree!
Pic's of tree could help also!
Robert
