Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question on cocoplums
« on: April 01, 2020, 10:40:36 PM »
Does anyone know much about cocoplums?  I know it is a shrub that grows in Miami used at a lot of houses for landscape purposes.  It has small, pinkish purple plum like fruit that I mostly hear is bland.
Well, my wife is from Nicaragua and kept on telling me how much she loved icaco, cocoplums as a child.  I always thought that her memory was off because I never heard anything good about the fruit.
But, tonight she showed me a farmer's market in Managua and had large, deep purple plum shaped fruit labeled as icaco. It looked nothing like what I have seen from Miami.  Do any central Americans on here know anything about this fruit?  Would love to grow it if I could find the correct variety.

Citrus General Discussion / New Zealand lemonade tree
« on: March 28, 2020, 02:44:18 PM »
Looking for opinions on fruit quality. I have very limited space and I have to be selective on my choices.  This is a tree that has been on my radar to purchase for a while, but, it was never available for sale in AZ.  Now a local nursery has one.  It is only semi dwarf, so it would take up a lot of room.  Is it worth it, is it top tier fruit or is it more of novelty.
If it was on flying dragon, I would have already purchased it, lol.

Citrus General Discussion / Recommendation on citrus to plant
« on: March 05, 2020, 11:29:02 PM »
I the front of my house, I have a Meyer lemon planted.  Only reason I planted it was because it was a dwarf ad on clearance.  Going to replace it.  I found a place with interesting dwarf citrus trees and the 3 most interesting ones I have to choose are gold nugget, cara cara, and AZ sweet orange(a left over variety from the Sunkist plant that closed in mesa, AZ.  Have tried it and it is a very high quality orange.)
Just want to see what people on here think would be the best choice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Had my syzygium confiscated by the feds
« on: December 28, 2019, 12:21:42 AM »
I had bought a syzygium this summer on eBay from Thailand.  It was a water apple variety.  I know you can get them in the states, but this seller had different varieties and this one was supposedly flavorful and sweet.  A green variety.  Well a couple of weeks ago, had a paper on my door from the USDA.  Even though the seller had provided me with a Thai government permit and certificate, apparently it did not go through quarantine coming into the USA and I did not request the proper permit.
I think I coukd have asked for it to be quarantined and pay a fine, but the USDA wanted to destroy it.  So, I thought for a second, realized I really don't like federal agents coming up to my door, so I called the agent and surrendered the shrub.  Sealed it and placed it on my front porch and it was gone that afternoon.
So, just posting this so anyone else that purchases this way gets the proper USDA permit and not waist their money.

« on: September 28, 2019, 12:20:38 AM »
This is the other tree I have had trouble growing.  To me, the fruit loom delicious but I keep managing to kill them.  I have had good success germinating seeds, but, not much luck keeping them alive.  Has anyone tried this fruit and know if it is worth the trouble?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is pitomba worth growing for the fruits?
« on: September 25, 2019, 11:54:19 PM »
I have bought about 4 of these eugenia and they have all died.  I have had really good look growing other eugenias, but, this one has been my nemesis.
Is the fruit of good enough quality that I should keep on spending money until I figure out how to grow one properly, or, fruit just average or below and I should give up?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My silas wood
« on: July 14, 2019, 12:20:55 AM »

Finally bought my grafted silas wood sapodilla on Amazon.  Was really hard to find one for a reasonable price.  Here in scottsdale, we have hit a low of 26 once in my 7 years here, so, I thought it better to go with this in a pot.  I usually go for the best flavor when it comes to fruits, but, I couldn't resist it's dwarf size and fruit production.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about shade
« on: June 09, 2019, 12:23:01 AM »
My cousin asked me a question that I couldn't answer.  He has a part of his yard that only gets 3-4 hours of sun a day.  He asked what kind of fruit he could grow.  He lives in Phoenix, zone 9b.
My first answer was nothing, but then I looked it up and blueberries, blackberries, loquat and pear where listed for shade.
I wanted to know if any of the plants we discuss on here would grow in shade in a desert zone 9b?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Thanks for advice on Acerola
« on: May 29, 2019, 01:36:44 AM »
Last year at this time, I was asking for advice on how to make my acerola fruit palatable.  Even when almost black, it was as sweet as an unripe lemon.
Well, I did the amendments and the fruit this year was much, much better.  Had my first fruit tonight and it tasted like a semi sweet raspberry.  Very pleasant taste and I got my vitamin C boost for the day.
