S.T. Maui
« on: June 15, 2015, 06:41:50 PM »
I found this mango under my S.T. Maui tree and I am wondering if it is possibly S.T. Maui or did someone put another mango under the tree.  I only had a couple of fruits set on my S.T. Maui and the other fruits are less than half the size of this one. This fruit is the size of Hatcher or Kensington Pride. Anyone have any ideas?

I think that is not ST Maui. Mine were red and turn slightly yellow at the bottom.

Picture from last year.

seems that if they get sunlight they do turn nice and red,  fruit growing in shade only have a bit of hue, a few are green.

I have to say, I really liked this variety,  productive, pretty and taste great at least in our climate  owner was not around this year during expo for me to get access.  or scion. this tree  is in a private collection. I did plant a seed last year, that is growing very well, but do not believe its a poly.

Behl,

The fruits on my tree do not have the pointed protrusion (beak) yours have at the bottom.

Today the fruit had some give to it and started to have a yellow cast, so I cut it open.  The top picture shows the fruit next to a PPK mango......the PPK is one of the larger fruits produced by my PPK tree.

As I cut the ST Maui, there was a very strong fragrance of piney mango.......sort of like Alphonso and other strong smelling Indian culitvars.  There was an interior defect.  It wasn't jelly seed but something funky was going on.  The flesh seemed to be a texture consistent with maturity and ripeness.  The flavor of the mango was good except for one thing......no sweetness whatsoever.  It was sour.  So, I assume this was a mango that was not fully mature, which had coloration and flesh texture which prematurely looked ready for prime time, but was not in fact ready.  Too bad....

Not sure.  This mango did fall, but it did not have very far to fall because of the location of a mound of dirt that abuts the tree.  And, there was no characteristic bruise that a fall would cause which have damage from the exterior inward. This was a defect coming from the seed and from the interior of the mango.  I have never seen it before.  It wasn't jelly seed.

Kind of looks like (hopefully it is not) some type of mango seed borer disease. I've seen it in Trinidad were the exterior is perfect but the interior is discovered wrecked when cut open after harvesting. Harry, did you explorer the seed to see if any larvae was present? Another possibility is that the seed started to germinate.

There was no germination and no observable insect activity.  I still have the seed and will explore it further.

Very distinctive beak on your fruit.  I can't recall seeing anything quite like that here.  Do all the fruits have similar pronounced pointy beaks?

Those do not look like they are even the same variety....... if they are from the same tree.  Is this a double grafted tree?

Weird is right.  Well, let's see how the fruit differ as they mature and are ripened to eat.  I am sure you will keep us posted.

This was sent to me by another Florida forum member.  It is from a grafted tree but the tag on it was incorrect...
