How well does Son Pari do in South Florida?
« on: April 11, 2017, 02:39:36 PM »
Zills is propagating Son Pari, a hybrid developed in Gujarat, India, The name means "Golden Angel."  However, not much is known about its growth habit, taste or productivity in South Florida. Hoping to hear from the experts..

It seems to produce pretty well. Medium spreading growth habit

Thanks, Alex..What about the taste?  Is it a must-have variety? Does it need spraying to hold fruit?

Looks like I’m not the only one interested in finding a little more information on the Son Pari mango, I recently ordered one off EBay that I believe came from Zills. Squam, I’m also interested to get your opinion of the mango.

I can't comment on the taste personally because I haven't sampled it yet. I have a tree with some fruit on it so maybe in a couple months. Don't know about "must have", but other people who've tried it have told me it's quite good with a rich complex flavor.

The tree looks disease resistant and I've seen it produce well in the Homestead area without spraying .

Son pari is a very good in taste and it is hybrid of alphanso and baneshan mango. It has high fruit keepn quality and high yielding .i was worked on this variety 3 years when i was in gujarat. It will be number one mango verysoon in upcoming feature. As i did one small experiment. After ripen like 75to 80 % if you keep fruit around 35-40 F temperature it will be good next 60 day as in same taste as you get it when it full ripe. It peel may be get darken in color but fruit pulp had same taste. And cery less in fibre. Fruit weight is 450 -800 gm  one plant around eet high and 6- 8 feet diamerte plant give you about 20 to 40 kg fruit.

I got to sample Son Pari last year.  It's one of my faves.  Really nice complex "Indian" taste but not too resinous, and not too sweet.  Very, very good in my opinion.

Best regards,
Scott

Thought I just update this thread with a few pictures.
First crop at my father's house.
Decent production in his small tree.

Purchased as a 3 gal from ZHPP and has been in ground since May 2017.  It us somewhat vigorous and does have a semi erratic growth habit like Coco Cream but not nearly as bad.  Production has been ok so far.  Got washed out from heavy rains last year, and main bloom hammered by frost this year.  Holding some fruit from later bloom.

Anyone have some more recent experience with son pari? How has it performed for you? Growth habit, disease resistance etc? I have a smallish tree with a few fruit, hoping it does well long term. Planning to put in ground next week.

It seems to do fine down here.
My fathers tree has a good crop considering the general lack of care.
I haven't seen much disease yet, the flavor has been fine but nothing amazing.

My Son Pari in does well in California. It's a moderate grower and produces fruit only after two years of being grafted (see photo). It seems to be suited for California insofar as we get plenty of chill in winter and good blooms in spring.

Even though my small two-year-old tree has many fruit sadly I will remove them to focus on vegetative growth in 2024. My focus on small mango trees is growth not production. If Florida gets a good winter chill this tree should do well.
