Cat 5 Hurricane Maria
« on: September 18, 2017, 10:18:16 AM »
Some islands will imminently experience their third hurricane in as many weeks.  Cat 4 is never to be slighted.  Following a Cat 5 and a Cat 3 with a Cat 4 in quick succession...seems unprecedented.  Our thoughts go out to Caribbean people.

I know we have a bunch of members from PR. I am hoping it misses  :'(. Currently looks on track for a direct hit with PR as a strong CAT4 Hurricane.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I encourage folks to find a way to donate.

Have to wonder if a point will come when some of these islands will become uninhabitable.

Being from the coast and finally getting the hell out and moving to the hill country, I have remarked for many years how quiet the tropics were.

Seems like all hell is breaking loose now.

This will be truly catastrophic for those poor folks.  I don't see how they're gonna make it.  :(

At this point, I think Maria is about as close as it is going to get to the D.R.  it is supposed to start making its turn more northward,   in the south where the capitol is,  we are just getting some gusts,  and rain when bands move through,  but nothing major.    P.R. and its mountains took a lot of "punch" away from this storm,

St. Croix is devastated. I lived there through Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and this looks just as bad.
vegetation stripped bare, power system will need rebuilding, they are looking at some years to come back.
I hope member Tang Tonic is Ok and will check in soon.

What is the tally now of the islands devastated by Irma and Maria?  Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Barbuda, Antigua, Dominica, St. Martin. Any others that have experienced widespread or total devastation?  It's heartbreaking to contemplate.  I hope they all get the assistance they need to recover and rebuild.  The vegetation will grow back in time, but all the homes and businesses that have been destroyed and lives that have been turned upside down!  Will the Caribbean ever be the same?

Turks/Caicos and BVI's plus the Florida Keys. Speaking of the Keys, haven't heard from member Livingparadise. Her property was subject to high water, and I expect she may have gotten heavy damage.

Very disturbing drive through of Fredericksted, St. Croix. This coastal town has many buildings and mahogany trees hundreds of years old.

I don't recall ever seeing a hurricane to our east and west at the same time before.  Thankfully both will be hundreds of miles away.
