Ever blooming mulberry
« on: December 19, 2017, 05:08:23 PM »
I live in zone 9b ion the Florida Coast. I have 3 everblooming mulberries and they took a whipping after the hurricanes in October. To get them bearing again should I prune them. Do they fruit from new growth?

If you prune them now and they flush and we get a frost you could
lose your crop? On a regular year without a hurricane I have had early flushes
that were damaged by cold afterwards. Mulberries definitely fruit after being pruned
I have 7 different types and I have never had all 7 fruit perfect in one season so
far. Last year we were so dry I had poor production even though I started watering.
After the hurricane several of mine flushed and fruited in the fall. Since you have 3
Maybe prune one now and wait on the other two?

pruning stimulates flowering and fruiting in my experience. mine just finished fruiting, about to chop it down mightily. keeps the tree small and the berries within reach as well. wouldn't worry about the cold, but I'm a little farther south than you

My wife loves the taste, yes I had a really winter crop but they were very small and not sweet, the trees are just 2 years old. What sort of feeling, mulching will help.

if u want lots of fruit, get the one called Thai dwarf, every time u cut back u get a crop...best crop seems to be spring, largest fruit...the fruits are large, crisp, and somewhat tart...
the everbearing makes small fruits, and doesn't produce near as much as thai dwarf...it's the most productive variety i can think of.

Who has the Thai Dwarf? How does mulberry do with grafting? Would love to do some top work on my established tree.
