Randia formosa / Rosenbergiodendron formosum in San Diego
« on: May 16, 2019, 12:44:27 AM »
I have a seedling of Randia formosa I grew from seed.  Can it survive outside?   I'm in San Diego.  If anyone has successfully grown Randia formosa (a.k.a. Rosenbergiodendron formosum, blackberry jam fruit) outside in SoCal, please let me know the best ways to keep it alive and happy.  Thanks in advance!

I have Randia megacarpa Brandegee here in Nipomo.  It is about 7 years old, never bothered by frost.

Hey Jack,
Any chance you have and seeds or plants from this plant? I’m in Lompoc and this plant is on my radar.

Wish I could give you seeds.  Plant survives, about 4 ft tall, never had flowers or fruit.  Ate the fruit from a tree in Baja, quite good.  Someday....

Is the fruit any good?  I started a ton of seedlings because the seeds were really cheap.  They got 100% germination... but since they've grown 6in+ they seem unhealthy and really prone to scale.  I ditched all but one and even that one I am starting to wonder if it is even worth growing out.
