GOAT Mango (3 Choices)
« on: July 31, 2019, 03:49:01 PM »
Is LZ still the GOAT? I’ll make it easier: your 3 choices.  Preferably you’ve tasted 50 or more mango varieties.  (Sadly I don’t qualify.)

Notable mangoes I’ve never eaten: E4, M4, CC, Phoenix, Carrie, Cac, ZINC, OS, Guava, and most Indian varieties.

Good question. And I can't answer based on only 3. Because mangos have such different flavor profiles, best I can do is say the best from each category (which of itself is only nebulously defined). So here goes:

GOAT MANGOS

CLASSIC - Tie between Ah Ping and Edward
INDIAN/ALPHONSO - from Devgad India: Alphonso, from Florida: Super Julie
INDIAN/WEST INDIAN RESIN - Tie between Sunrise and White Piri
INDIAN/WEST INDIAN SPICE - Mesk
CITRUS - Tie between Lemon Zest, Cac, Peach Cobbler (all have different complementary flavor aspects)
INDOCHINESE - Sweet Tart
COCONUT - Tie between M-4 and Coconut Cream
PINEAPPLE - Pineapple Pleasure
COCONUT/PINEAPPLE - Sugarloaf/E-4
FLORAL - Mahachanok
UNIQUE - ST Maui (flavor is citrus (not orange), Pineapple, Guava)
- Mark

LZ is very good/ My LZ tree has been very very good to me and others tasting its deliciousness. But since you mention it first, what is the low down on its supposed bacterial leaf? disease. Please anyone who knows anything why Zill discontinued LZ please let us know. So far my LZ tree is healthy and I just was trimming it (post harvest) in the past hour with my electric pole saw.  Not battery powered pole saw.

Carrie is too strong for some but my Carrie fruits come in early. As I eat some Carrie fruit I say to  myself.... and no bs on this..... I think that ye old Carrie, origin in 1930's or so, is as good or better as any new Zill. And good as in exotic flavors as you scrape the skin after cutting halves off the mango.

wiki  (by Alex I believe)
The Carrie tree was named after Lawrence Zill's mother, Carrie Zill.[2] It first fruited in 1940 and commercial propagation began in 1949.[3]

As far as LZ and diseases, Har says he removed all the diseased fruit when still small and undeveloped at Truly Tropical and the rest of the crop was fine.

Good to know! I have not seen this problem on my LZ tree.
Thanks John and how about next season I will take some prime Carrie mango to your place so you can sample.  You should remind me if you are interested.

That’s a kind offer.  Thank you.  You gave me my first Sweet Tarts a few years back.

Chaunsa imported from Pakistan at the top for me, Julies imported from Jamaica would be second, and Madame Francis Imported from Haiti.  If you ask me US grown, I'd say Orange Delicious from Ensey, East Indian seedling from North Miami Beach, and Zill's new Raw Honey.  I like the hype mangoes too but these are my favorites. Dont kill me because I didnt say Sweet Tart or OS 😂

So I'm going to conclude there is no GOAT mango, especially as your mango exposure, sophistication, and appreciation increases.  Better to stick with Top-Tier, Top-Ten, or Top-Dozen, or your Ten Favorite, or Favorites of the Year--along those lines.

Mark, I did like your list.  How have you come to taste so many mangos when you live in Arizona?

I read this article : http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/news/20190614/12000-pounds-jamaican-julie-east-indian-mangoes-shipped-us

I guess its the first time in 20 years Jamaican mangoes were allowed to be imported.  I found the distributors phone number and he laughed when I asked to buy some but sent me to a retail client of his.  Turns out he also brought in East Indians but the port of Miami held his shipment and they ended up rotting out while sitting in an extremely hot container.  Really sad to hear this happening to a local small business and know he lost out on thousands of pounds of Julies and East Indians.  He told me he'll be right back it next year with tons of optimism though.

Is LZ still the GOAT? I’ll make it easier: your 3 choices.  Preferably you’ve tasted 50 or more mango varieties.  (Sadly I don’t qualify.)

For me so far this year it has been Dwarf Hawaiian Carrie and Dot. With Coconut Cream Karen Michelle tied for 4th. I am coming down to South Florida next week so this may change. So far here in Central Florida I've only had a few pickering's. My sweet tart and orange sherbet aren't quite ready yet. 🙂

Hence why tastes are so subjective and/or people get mesmerized by what others write.  For instance,  none of the five you mentioned would even make it near my top 5 or even 10....and of those five, only Karen Michelle is in my planted collection of 22 trees

Indian/West Indian: Carrie
Citrus: Orange sherbet
Indochinese: Sweet Tart

Still waiting to try cotton candy and M-4. I also really liked Fruit Cocktail but it may not be possible for me to plant it depending on if I like M-4 or cotton candy.
