Muntingia Dropping Flowers
« on: June 15, 2020, 08:58:01 PM »
I have a strawberry tree in a 15 gallon pot which has been flowering for a while now but no fruits are forming. The flowers seem to open, an then fall off a few days after. I have tried hand pollination but this hasn't worked either.
Does anyone know whats wrong?

When I had a Muntungia- in my basement under artificial light and without any pollinators available- the fruit would still form once the tree got old enough. Many trees start "practice flowering" before they're ready to hold fruit; maybe you just need to wait a few months before it is willing to hold fruit. Once my tree matured, it produced plenty of fruit, which I found to be lacking in flavor (your experience may be different) and then I gave my Muntingia away...

My tree puts out lots of flowers and fruits at the same time and it is in store bought soil and partial shade. Maybe it needs fertilization? My tree has dropped some flowers in the winter but starts producing fruit in the summer.

I've noticed these trees like fertilization to hold fruit- like sapodillas. I fert my inground with a slow release fert about 3 weeks ago....flowerless...and this is the 1 week now since I'm picking fruits daily.
The Earth laughs in flowers. And bear gifts through fruits.
No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

I love my strawberry tree! It has been in bloom since late March and just keeps producing. I have only had it for a year, just planted in ground less than a month ago with NO transplant shock at all. I love the taste of the fruit. It might just be wanting more sun?

Thanks for the replies,
I guess fertilization is my problem as I haven fed the tree in a while. Can anyone tell me what fertilizer would work best, or if muntingia trees aren't that picky?

I use 8-3-9, but any fruit tree fertilizer will work.

I have a red and yellow in the ground here's a picture of the yellow at 16 months old It's
grown allot since this picture

I never water or fertilize my trees? My red got blown over by Hurricane Irma and the side branch
became the center and I cut the old part out. This past winter they even flowered and put out a
little fruit but now there are so many bees on it every day. They are the easiest tree in my yard.
I also broke a runner off and it rooted and it's on the other side of my property and never water or fertilize.
The green fruit in the morning gets ripe by the evening

Beautiful and amazing growth !!  I am impressed.  Does the fruit from the yellow taste like the red? if not how is it different?

We lay out a waterbed sheet around the trunk of the tree, then shake it and the fruit falls much easier for the old lady to pick up the harvest   :D

I had a muntingia for a while and during the colder spring the fruit would be very low quality with little set. Once it warmed up it fruited like crazy with good quality.

I tried mutingia at Champa nursery. The trees shot straight up but even the lowest fruit were hard to reach, with the very lowest ones being about 7 feet high and only the size of your fingernail after you pulled them down. There weren't many fruit on a branch either for all of the effort. I think they grow quickly and would require a lot of pruning; they had a row of them about 12 feet tall and in containers that were 15 or 25 gallons.

(At the time they seemed to be have much more big trees than they could sell and I suspect hardly anyone was buying them.)

They were sweet and had a different taste that was pleasant, but if you don't have space I would grow something else. It's obvious that the tiny fruit aren't for ground-based apes like us and are probably for birds that can easily fly that high for tiny rewards.

I use citrus type fertilizer. I found that when they are young they don't hold much fruit but once they get bigger almost all the fruit will set so you probably just need more time. I have a yellow and a red and the red one is like 20 times bigger than the yellow and they are just over a year old. Lots of fruit setting now, probably a couple hundred.

I have to assume that yours is in a greenhouse, since you're in Indiana?
I have a red and a yellow, both in 15 gallon pots. I forgot to provide shelter last winter, and both died. Still kicking myself for letting them die.
I loved their fruits. I'm in the process of getting another one.

I kept mine outside during the warm months and inside my house during the winter months. It really doesn’t like the cold dry indoor climate.

They can become a big problem in conditions they really like. Mione began putting out so many root suckers I had to remove it after they began coming up 50 feet away. I had to cut and paint the suckers with herbicide or there would have been dozens and who knows how far this could have continued?
