Questions on surinam cherry
« on: June 26, 2020, 02:50:01 AM »
Hello ,what variety do u think is this surinam cherry . It has never fruited for me ,since its a new acquired plant. It is blooming now , but the flowers are falling one by one, the plant stays in my green house ,which is opened in the day and bees can polinate ,but they just dont visit . I tryed to hand polinate and the flowers are shedding polen, but after I did I did not see any of the pollen sticking to the stigma- is this a humidity problem or something else???  Also are surinams self fertyle, everywhere on the net they say they are , but shure doesnt act like it is .Many tanks to all for any info

I believe surinam cherries are self fertille, I am 99% sure about that.
About the variety from the leaves and the new growth it doesnt look similar to my surinam cherries and to other pics i have seen. The leaves seem too elongated and new growth is different.
But it is definatelly an eugenia from the leaves and flowers.

I have identified it as a sizigium - eugenia mirtyfolia ....so the question now is ,is it worth it to grow it ,I mean It bears  fruits ,but how do they taste ?? The web says the birds love them .....

They taste okay. Not too bad, but nothing to write about. The taste is very similar with a bland wax jambu.
People usually grow it for hedge here since it is low maintanance and drought tolerant.

What ever it turns out to be it looks like it will make plenty of berries all at once and they surely could be turned into jam or jelly, maybe with a jot of lemon or lime juice added for contrast.

Just a thought.
