Annona pollination question
« on: July 08, 2021, 12:30:06 AM »
Can you please explain to me what happens if I put sugar apple pollen in cherimoya flower or vise versa. Is that how Atemoya is made? If I use reticulata pollen is that how you get reticulata and then you have to grow the seedlings out?

Har has stated it multiple times, but I can't remember clearly. I believe the female is the start of the name of the hybrid, therefore Atemoya would be Ate (sugar apple) pollinated with the pollen of a cherimoya. I do believe in common usage however that any hybrid of the the two would be referred two as Atemoya.

If I have remembered the naming convention properly the cherilata is a cherimoya pollinated by a reticulata. I do believe it was a reticulata thread where Har divulged the naming convention.

The seedlings would give a mix of varieties.
You need to learn how to ID them.

Yes that’s what I was wondering how it was created but I guess the best seedling was eventually grown out and then grafted onto other rootstocks? Id like to buy a grafted tree but I also want to grow out some seedlings and see what comes out in the next 5-10 years or so

You could grow out as many as you like and select the good ones to keep.
You only need to graft them if you intent to sell copies of a good one.
