Genetic variation in Bloodline (not true to seed type)
« on: February 03, 2024, 01:04:58 PM »
Good morning, at various times they talk about results from citrus fruits made from seeds, about the fact that many "cogticos" are not going to give you the same variety.  Well, this would be the result of F2 in a first generation hybrid of two very different species.  Bloodlime is a cross between Rampurg lime and citrus caviar (Microcitrus australasica) and due to their totally different morphologies, the next generation I can see what came out of Microcitrus but in very different versions.

Is that a very compact growth habit for photo 2? Or is it just small?

both, photo 3 is the brother and it is much larger.  Now I am grafting into a citrumelo root to speed up the growth, it is very slow otherwise.

I have also planted the seeds from the Australian Blood Lime - sometimes known as Red Centre Lime.
You are right that the seedlings are very variable in appearance.
Unlike many hybrids, I have found that they are never vigorous and grow very poorly and often eventually die. I have not yet had any produce fruit.
